Friend had a holiday booked for late May but thinks the atmosphere there would be too much to bear.

WOuld you be able to enjoy a holiday there?

noway

hana · 19/05/2007 22:23

i wouldn't enjoy a holiday there

expatinscotland · 19/05/2007 22:23

No, because I'd never have gone to a place like that in a million years anyway.

Even if I'd won a holiday at a place like that, I'd have flogged it.

CODalmighty · 19/05/2007 22:24

expat you never go on holiday anwyay

Cloudhopper · 19/05/2007 22:24

Well it depends on the cancellation cost. If you would get most of your money back I probably would go elsewhere.

If for no other reason than to punish MW in some way.

I know that is probably a bizarre and somewhat red-top view, but there it is.

jampot · 19/05/2007 22:25

i imagine it would be quite oppressive right now. However on the plus side I imagine one would be very safe given the media/police presence there

expatinscotland · 19/05/2007 22:25

We went to Perthshire last year, cod.

This year, we're going to Nairn.

So yes, we do go, but we prefer to stay in the UK.

CODalmighty · 19/05/2007 22:25

lol from scotland to...........scotland!

Ladymuck · 19/05/2007 22:27

No.

But the holiday would be really cheap. MW have heavily discounted the Ocean Club to the end of June 9and if you go through someone like Avant Gard then they knock another 10% off.

Tbh I had looked at the Ocean Club as it is one of the few MW beach clubs open at Easter, but we rejected it as it was so piecemeal (MW guests being no more than 25% of guests etc), and especially that the nighttime arrnagements were significantly less secure than their other resorts. MW are letting guests swap.

expatinscotland · 19/05/2007 22:28

Better believe it!

Don't see the point in paying top whack to go and roast to death as a 'holiday'. Spent most of my life sweltering. No, thanks!

Southerners always laugh at Brits paying top whack to go to insufferably hot places in summer, like Florida.

Ladymuck · 19/05/2007 22:29

Did Malory et al come up with a siggestion for those MNers living in Cornwall/Devon? I did read the first few posts and felt sorry for those living there who were being advised to find a plush house and share with the inlaws...

handlemecarefully · 19/05/2007 22:36

Cripes I don't know.....I might go if my holiday was a couple of months hence, but in a week or so time...well your friend could well be right about the atmosphere being too much to bear. A bit fresh and raw atm

SueW · 19/05/2007 22:43

Found this review of MW in Praia da Luz when looking for guides to Dublin - about Ocean Club but written in April.

Also a review of Featherdown Farm which someone asked about recently but is completely irrelevant to this thread.

dolally · 19/05/2007 22:47

No, i wouldn't, there's not that much police presence, and a fair bit of press looking for something to talk about. Life goes on.

Milliways · 19/05/2007 22:47

I wouldn't want to go.

Reminds me of thinking of Thailand after the Tsunami - although that was on a totally different scale.

Probably no way you would get a refund covered on the insurance though!

chocolatemousse · 19/05/2007 22:52

No way.

chocolatemousse · 19/05/2007 23:00

No way would I go

lilmamma · 19/05/2007 23:14

I would go as you wont be in the exact place,or she is going to the same place. You will see pics of her but as mean as it seems life does go on.even if you went to spain you would still see pics of her.

I would cancel

girrafey · 20/05/2007 16:09

we arnt cancelling and my parents and myself and my dd go out there in 2 weeks. admitedly we have a villa that is just outside the town, but do go into town daily for supplies and beach etc. to be honest we thought about it, but we go to the villa every year and dont think that much would be ruined. however if she was lucky enough to be found ok while we were out there then we wouldnt care about the increase in press etc, we would be so relieved anyway.

chenin · 20/05/2007 16:44

I wouldn't hesitate in going there... I would imagine the area needs a bit of supporting and surely it isn't the fault of the locals that this has happened... and they have been tremendously supportive in all of this... it would show a bit of thanks maybe.

I went to New York 7 weeks after 9/11, after much deliberating. It was the best thing I could have done. Locals of NY were openly in tears at how grateful they were that the British were still prepared to come to NY as a tourist, despite what they had been through.

newgirl · 31/05/2007 21:35

if it helps we just got back from a mw in corsica and it was great - some kids stayed up in the pm some families used the baby listening (nannies outside the doors constant listening now) and everyone was safe and had a good time.
