New Orleans - where to stay?

Hi
Am planning a 5 day trip to New Orleans in December/over New Year’s Eve. Can anyone recommend a place to stay? Anything we absolutely must not miss? Thank you!

Don't miss a wander down Frenchman Street - lots of great bars and street musicians. Also highly recommend a night at Bachannal - www.bacchanalwine.com/ - everyone I recommend it to loves it.

It is quite a few years since we went, but I doubt that some things have changed:

Drink a Hurricane at Pat O'Brien's
Eat blackened catfish or chicken
Eat jambalaya
Take a Mississippi paddle steamer trip
Visit the voodoo museum
Wander down Bourbon Street
Take a trip out to a bayou

Things to avoid:
The shoe shiners
People who try to fleece you. We are pretty savvy and streetwise, but the locals are really clever at trying to extract money from you

We saw a lot of drunks in Jackson Square, and it was the only city in the US we have been to where we felt unsafe. We stayed in a hotel on Chartres Street, and the walk back in the very dimly lit streets made us quite nervous. We also found it quite expensive.

Regarding accommodation log onto : www.bookings.com and see whats on offer.
You might get a bargain at a really nice hotel.
Make sure that any hotels that you choose have the option to pay later, that way if you cancel, you do not have to pay. It's a bit more expensive, but worth not having to give up your money if you have to change plans.
I would check bookings every day, because price changes.
Something you might want to consider: do you want a hotel that provides breakfast?
I always go for a hotel with a kitchen: fridge/microwave/sink. That way I have some place to store and warm up my left over food

Hotel dauphine is in the French quarter buy a bit away from the noisy bits. Or find a place in the garden district and get the tram into the French quarter
