Portable wifi hotspot for France. What product to buy?

My DS is going to France for s week with school and they are allowed to take their phones. It was suggested that we buy a travel wifi hotspot and get a SIM card for it

I have looked at Amazon and am just baffled as to what I need.

My DH will be doing some work trips overseas so he thinks he will also find it useful at some stage but any recommendation for a cheap device would be appreciated. Especially as I don't really know what I need!
Thanks!

I use my phone as a wifi hotspot. The change in rules means that you can use your data allowance (make sure you've got enough) in Europe without an extra charge until Brexit - but check your provider in case they are different. Most smart phones these days have a mobile hotspot option.

Ok thanks. I will check that out. He has a small data allowance as he gets away with using wifi everywhere
I had assumed he couldn't use his data overseas and was worried even if he could that he would then run up a large bill!

Data and calls work the same as UK contract no so free in the Eu - at least till brexit. Plenty of free wifi in France as well.

That seems like odd advice. He should be able to use data as if he were in the uk, for the same charges.
