Have only been to Crete which was great but very excited about going to Corfu next year (after watching too much of the Durrells!)

JonSnowsCloak · 22/04/2018 19:41

Santorini was beautiful, quite expensive though! We stayed in Kamari beach hotel xx

Ivgotasecretcanyoukeepit · 22/04/2018 19:42

Santorini it is my favourite of all of the Greek islands! I also love Mykonos.

user1471453601 · 22/04/2018 19:47

Halki, but vv few companies do it. Rural Greece at its best. Nothing to do,so no guilt about doing nothing.

Off there again in three weeks. Heaven

Serafinaaa · 22/04/2018 19:57

Been to lots. All very different:
Crete- massive, busy, hot
North Corfu- green, quite quiet, nice
Paxos- little Corfu
North kefalonia- beautiful, peaceful, probably my favourite
Ithaca- a little kefalonia, less to do, liked the literary history
Santorini- stunning, busy, expensive
Agistri- tiny, lovely, easy access to Athens

mejon · 22/04/2018 21:39

User147145360 I'm very jealous! Went to Halki at least once a year from 1996 to 2004. Then children arrived and I've not been back since. However I'm sorely tempted to go this summer with DD2 who's 7 but slightly worried that she'll not get the whole 'nothing' to do apart from swim and read thing that drew me there in the first place. Enjoy!

Thank you all, great advice

We've been to Santorini a few times, but not recently. I gather it's very touristy now.

We went to Kefalonia last year which was beautiful. Amazing beaches and not too busy.

cherrytrees123 · 22/04/2018 22:16

Kefalonia is my top pick. Not too commercialised and easy to get around.

Ohyesiam · 22/04/2018 22:17

Tell us more bout what sort of holiday you want, and what month you are going on.

Flaskfan · 22/04/2018 22:18

Kos was good with kids; water completely blue and full of fish. Soft spot for kephalonia cos we went there when I.first met dh. Beach was shingle. Santorini as above. Skiathos ok but very British. Heading for zante this year.

user1471453601 · 22/04/2018 22:46

mejon, Halki remains as it ever was (except they now have a desalination plant). I've been going there for over 14 years, perhaps our paths have crossed? The clock still stands at 4:20.

delilahbucket · 22/04/2018 22:48

Depends on the type of holiday you want. We love Skiathos because it is so relaxing but if you need something beyond the swimming pool or beach there isn't much.

2 families with 4 teenagers in total, I need to have access to a decent hospital if necessary.

Last 2 weeks in August

AlannaOfTrebond · 22/04/2018 23:16

If you need to have access to a decent hospital I would be very, very careful.

Many of the islands have small clinics or fairly basic hospital. When i lived on Corfu (one of the largest islands) people would get a ferry to the mainland to avoid the hospital and friends from other islands would travel to Athens for treatment.

I don't want to put you off Greece, I lived there for a number of years and still go back at least once a year. It is a wonderful place, but the medical system is desperate for cash and very different to the UK.

If a good hospital is that essential I would look at somewhere within easy reach of Athens or somewhere like Parga on the Epirus Coast which is within reach Ioannina another well regarded hospital. I only know the Ionian well, but I'm sure others can advise on the East Coast.

scotchpie · 23/04/2018 19:09

Thank you Alanna, that's the only thing the worries me about needing access to a good hospital.

Maybe need to re think about another location.

Elvisola · 23/04/2018 19:13

Have a look at Halkidiki. It's on the mainland so potentially better for hospitals but it's stunning and there's lots to do and see.

jocktamsonsbairn · 23/04/2018 23:03

There is a modern university hospital on Crete and the hospital
In Thessaloniki kept me alive after a bad accident on Skiathos. I don't know what effect the economic crisis has affected hospitals.
