Planning a road trip in California in August (late I know) and flights are coming in at 4k for a family of 5 ouch. Am I just too late? How much did you pay for your california road trip? We are planning a 2 week trip. TIA

4k for the five of you, is that a direct flight (do not go indirect). Don't forget thought this works out to about £800 per person for a 12 hour flight.

Parts of Highway 1 are still closed due to the mudslides. This is current information:-

Think accommodation may be more of an issue overall and particularly in SF. That city can work out to be very expensive per night to stay in, its on a par with NYC in terms of number of visitors.

I think we paid about £600 each going to Las Vegas returning from san Diego. That was 21 august to 11th sep
San Francisco is really expensive to stay and even the car cost $60 a day parking.
Yosemite may be booked up already if you wrre planning to stay there.

Prices have been climbing steadily since February/March - I’m afraid they don’t sound too bad ☹️

😮I was thinking of staying in airbnb’s and do it on a budget. Went to NY last year and found it very pricey. Also booked that too late pf course. Must get more organised. Thanks for responses.

Have you looked at BA flights from Gatwick to Oakland? They’re not daily but you might be able to get something more around the £650 price for an adult.

randomthoughts · 22/04/2018 22:06

And there’s also an extra £50 per flight off if you book before midnight tomorrow!

Where do you live?? Virgin are coming up with Manchester to San F for 2 weeks leaving 14 Aug at 529 each (2644 for 2 adults and 3 kids).
Gave a play on skyscanner/Google flights/kayak and see what comes up if you can be slightly flexible with dates or airports.

SF now has strict laws re Airbnb which have now commenced:-

We booked Manchester to las vegas a few months ago for August for 700pp. Planning on driving from las vegas to san fransisco via yosemite if that's an option for you.

somewhereovertherain · 24/04/2018 07:33

My kids are going to San Fran in July and just had an alert that flights are now £520 flying Virign from Man to San Fran.

Should be able to get a good rate the us schools will be back in August and it’s stupidly hot so not as much demand.

Look at WestJet from Gatwick via Canada.

Atalune · 24/04/2018 07:36

We booked ours last month £2600 for 4 of us with virgin direct into LAX and out of SF.

accommodation is pricey, cheapest I could find was £170/night for an air b n b. We have done a mix of hotels and air b n bs

Fly BA or Norwegian to Oakland and Airbnb, that's how we did it but still spent a huge amount of money (eating out was soooo expensive). Yosemite may be booked up so commuting in & out will be necessary, which is time consuming.
