Best route to travel Asia

Soooo we are looking at travelling Asia for about 7-8 weeks. We will be flying from New Zealand - although travelling from Australia is also an option. It'll be probably from late October to just before Christmas. Or is worth staying in Asia for Christmas? We would be travelling back to New Zealand - working holiday visa, so no family or anything to stay with so absolutely open to spending Christmas anywhere.

The places I really want to go are Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia.

I'm torn between Indonesia and Laos. Does anyone have any experience/ recommendations? Are we better to travel train/boat/bus rather than fly between countries?
Any help on the best routes?

I appreciate this is quite broad, we definitely want to do the Thai islands. Halong bay, Angkor Wat etc. I'd also love to do trekking/caving and the like.

Any useful info is much appreciated 😊

Fly to Hanoi to do trips halong bay salad. Then down to ho chi min city boat up mecon river to Cambodia to killing fields then boat /taxi upto siem rep for ankle wat.
Over to Thailand chaing mai in north lots of temples and chaing rai. Travel down to Bangkok lots to see on way.
Krabi, Koh lantra boat to koh lipi small but lovely. Boat to lankowi then Singapore is definatley worth a visit.. maybe Borneo or Philippines then home.

Up to you how you travel depends to time costs.

We’ve done the island hopping down from Krabi last year it was fab. Can also get to pipi island Rainey beach and all those desisted islands you see in the books but they are framed with tourists now.
Borneo see orangutan and great for diving snorkelling but getting busy with Chinese tourists.
Philopines good for diving snorkelling lots to see we stayed on boho can keep you entertained for a week

Do your planning and you’ll be fine.

Few tips
Book trips when you get there
Pre booked trip to along bay £150 when there costs £80

Sorry for spelling but on a phone in Bangkok after a month around Borneo, Vietnam and north Thailand

Take ear plugs for Vietnam they do like using there horns and they all ride scooters

Suggest check how long you can stay in each country without visas. Cambodia pay for visa at entry point. Don't forget travel insurance and emergency money/funds. Borneo beautiful coral reefs and orangutans. Thailand temples and bargain at the markets and island hopping. Singapore gardens by the bay. Enjoy your travels

@fuzzyduck1 that's very helpful thankyou!! Our budget would be about 3-4K for around 7ish weeks give or take.

I'd never considered Borneo but as both posters have recommended I'm now going to do some through research!

Are there particular places I book boats etc when I'm there? Or do I do it online?

@Airp0rtqq I've had a look at visas already, I think the general time limit is 30 days, I think it might be Cambodia that is 15 days?, but we won't be in one place that long! Yes to travel insurance, I will be be speaking to someone who specialises in this kind of travel but I won't be booking anything with them as I'm sure they like to hike the prices up!
