For ds1 and ds2 (13 & 8)

We are going long haul, they need to be 4 wheeled, sturdy but light
Don't want to spend a fortune but have a feeling that's the only way to get decent cases for them

Carry on bag dimensions or checked luggage size? How much use are these bags going to get? Unless you travel as a family very frequently then I wouldn’t bother with anything expensive for the kids. Just look on amazon for something the right size, with 4 wheels and decent reviews.

And buy it in the most garish, colourful pattern you can find.

I can spot mine a mile off on any carousel, amongst all the black/navy ones with the oh-so-clever ribbon to identify it from all the rest which also have the same ribbon tied on too

We go away every year and they used to share a shitty suitcase but as they're getting older they need more room.

I'm not sure if a cabin sized bag would be enough for a 1-2 week holiday

I've had a few Tripp suitcases. They are good and often heavily reduced if you can wait for them to go on sale.

They seem to be on sale at Debenhams at the moment!

Tripp have currently got free 3-5 day delivery.

I've bought Tripp ones for my 3 dc's and touch wood so far they've been great. Really easy for them to wheel and not too noisy ( unlike the hideous character branded tat we used to have )

Have a look at TKmaxx both in store and on line, there are some bargains to be had with many sizes to choose from and prices to suit all.

As far as cabin sizes go, dont forget airline have different sizes and some are more generous than others with weight. Check sizes carefully, it makes me laugh when cases say cabin sizes approved, approved by who? there is no regulatory body who does this. Its up to the individual airlines, and labels which say such are just a marketing gimmick.

I've used Tripp for years - reliable and light. Would recommend.

The large is really big but light. The wee one is light and fits everything for a 4/5 night trip. I only paid £22 and £39 for each of them. Well made and really worth the money. Especially in the sale.

I have the superlite 4w large. two of them does a family of 4 for a 11 day holiday.

We had Tripp Pillo suitcases for years (they don't make them anymore) and they were fantastic. However when we collected our luggage at Heathrow coming off a Thai Airways flight in December they were totally ruined, covered in a thick oily rust substance, we were mightily pissed off as they have been on dozens off long haul trips and were as sound as the day we bought them. We've just bought some Eastpak bags (prefer soft luggage) and while they haven't been on a flight yet we took them for a week in the U.K., they hold loads.

I've got rucksack filled was 13 kg for a month. Going back it was 20 kg after buying a few things. My tip is to pack light. This is my bag that goes into the hold of aeroplane. Inside the plane I've used smaller rucksack or small suitcase.

I like the eastpak trans4 ones. We use the medium ones for 2-3 weeks long haul and I have a cabin one for shorter trips. They are vastly better than Tripp cases I’ve had previously and the four wheeled aspect makes them so easy to handle.

Prices are constantly up and down on amazon. I bought DD a medium one in khaki for about £60 last week but it’s £133 today. My cabin one is dark grey and was half price in an Asos sale. Has done me for a week but to a warm destination.

I use packing cubes and also have a selection of fabric laundry and shoe bags from past hotel stays. Using these to sort out and compress my belongings means I’ve never felt the a medium is not big enough even for a 3 week trip

We do this too, packing cubes are fantastic.

Regards size we only travel with hand luggage managed two weeks in the states, Barbados, Sweden, Spain and others on hand luggage only. Only issues is if you need towels and shoes.

As far as cost unless it’s being used 3-4 times a year or more I’d go cheap.

We use cabin zero bags weigh about 300 Grams and just grab a trolley.
