We're heading off to St Johann in Tirol near Kitzbeul for 2 weeks this summer. Just DP and I. Can anyone who's holidayed in that neck of the woods give any recommendations of places and things you enjoyed most. TIA

I can't help with recommendations but we will be in Bavaria and Austria (near Salzburg) in the summer and I recommend getting the Lonely Planet guide. I've tried a few guide books and this is the best one I've read and has loads of recommendations. There is also an Austrian destination guide on Tripadvisor that's good for advice.

We are planning to visit Lake Chiemsee with one of King Ludwig's palaces, Salzburg and Berchtesgaden (Eagle's Nest etc) which should all be within an hours drive if you have your own transport.

tattie helbron Palace is a must in salzburg so gorgeous. So unusual inside I was thinking about it the other day how I would love to returned

That will be a fabulous trip but we found everything very expensive (admission fees to sites, eating out, lifts to the mountain tops for walking).

Oooh, some posts. Thank you, will have a look for the Lonely Planet book. DP would like to visit Berchtesgaden, but as we're not hiring a car I'll need to see if independent travel or a tour would be better. Currently saving furiously so we have a good pot of money for doing things.

I think there is bus to heilbronn, its also where pavilion from sound if music is. It's a beautiful mansion, unusual quirky interior, stunning and funny water fountain Gardens and beautiful park to relax in. It was one of trip highlights.. I wouldn't miss it. I may have spelt name wrong.

Berchtesgaden is lovely, you can take a bus to Königsee and do a beautiful boat trip, also visit the Kehlsteinhaus (Eagles Nest) for amazing views.

Thanks for the tips. Can't wait, but we've got 3 months until we go.

Berchtesgaden is lovely, eagles nest is worth a visit. Can't imagine how you'll do it without a car but maybe there's good public transport.

Just wondering if you've been yet? I started another thread asking for recommendations but wondered if you had feedback please.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 22/07/2018 11:56

I haven't been, but have it on good authority that it's definitely possible to do the Eagle's Nest without a car. It's on my list!

Sorry, @LIZS, just noticed your post. We absolutely loved St Johann in Tirol. Stayed at the Post Hotel. Loads going on, spotlessly clean, a beautiful place and a fantastic base for getting out and about. Would really recommend the whole area for families and couples. Already looking at Austria again for next year.

Thank you justmuddling. We have since booked a trip to the Italian Lakes but may yet visit Austria next year.

Justmuddlingalong · 05/08/2018 22:17

Glad you've booked something. Have a fantastic time in Italy.
