Recommendation of site to book French gite

We're looking to book a Gite in France. Looking to book through a legitimate site with lots of choice of Gites. What website do you recommend we book through? We are specifically thinking about the Bretagne region, for this August. We don't want to book a package, just the Gite itself. Thank you in advance for your recommendations! (Not interested in Air BnB btw.)

There are lots of legitimate sites out there (Booking.com/HomeAway/Owners Direct etc etc) but be aware that they will automatically charge you a hefty "service fee" in addition to charging the gite owner a commission too. Most booking sites these days prevent any direct contact with the owner. It would be worth having a look at one of the big sites and scouring the adverts for any unique name associated with the gite(s) you are interested in - then try googling the name of the property/location to find the actual owners website. Much simpler to book directly with the owners and it will save you (and possibly them!) money. We used to rent out our French gites - very happy to not be doing that anymore. Hope you find something lovely.

Gites de France is the best one for the type of place you are looking for, especially in Bretagne.

A while now since we've been to France, but we used Chez Nous. Were very good / loads of choice and the one we booked was excellent.

Gites de France has the widest selection. They seem to have gites in most towns/villages in France! There is an English version of their website.

Brittany Ferries has loads of gites in Brittany but probably not worth it if you're not looking for a package with a ferry. Also, lots of their gites are booked by this time as they do 20% discounts in October/December.

Thank you everyone for the great advice!

I use www.holidayfrancedirect.co.uk - it’s a Brittany Ferries company where you book direct with owners and get a code for 20% off your BF ferry crossing.

Other places to look - Frenchconnections.co.uk and rent-in-france.co.uk both will put you in touch with the gite owner.

Another vote for chez nous...worked well for us
