Bruce Peninsula or Alconquin?

Hi,

Can anyone offer advice regarding Ontario? We are going for 2 1/2 weeks in August and will be spending a few days in Toronto, then going to the Falls, and then travelling onto London Ontario to spend a few days with family. Would like to spend a week somewhere where we can put our roots down by a waterfront and relax. We have two kids - boy and a girl in early teens and our Dd has hi functioning autism. She will especially need to have a quiet week or so after the chasing around and frankly the rest of us feel the same! We envisage going on couple of short trips, a local walking and sitting by the waterfront, kayaking or fishing and reading. Family seem to think Alconquin but the Bruce Peninsula looks amazing. Anyone have experience and advice for us?

Thanks!

We went to Algonquin last summer with our 8 and 11 year old - it was amazing! Exactly what I imagine a N American summer cabin (“cottage”) holiday to be. Swimming in the lake is brilliant and the kayaking is ace.

The mosquitoes are CRAZY though so you need to take precautions.

It’s a really magical place...I would highly recommend.

We stayed here www.killarneylodge.com/algonquin-park/ and it was amazing. Saw lots of wildlife. We went before DC and it really is quiet so don't know if a week might be too long for your DC? Also we went spring so there weren't many mosquitos.

well honestly you are not the only one!

I have been to both, camping in both parks. Other roofed accommodation is usually outside the parks, with some exceptions of Yurts and cabins offered by parks Canada reservation.pc.gc.ca/Home.aspx?gccf=true . Whilst there is quite a bit to do in Bruce, the shipwrecks are pretty amazing and remarkably preserved, I think Algonquin might suit you better and offer you more choice. The water in Bruce is also glacial and really, really cold even in August which isn't great! Algonquin also offers backcountry camping which might be nice to do with teenagers, so canoeing for about 3-4 hours and staying in the wilderness. You would want to consider if you wanted beachfront or a dock going into the lake, which often have boats and kayaks you can borrow too. The stars are incredible. Algonquin is a little wilder, has bear, a wolf howl evening, and racoons and chipmunks that know a cooler from 40 paces. There are tons of walks where you can see the beaver dams and things too. Bear/racoon proof your garbage if you don't want an evening visitor! Just looking at where you are going, have you considered the New York Finger lakes? Might suit better esp if you are going to Niagara..
