I've 2 teenage boys and a dog, where can we go via public transport from London for a weeks holiday? Preferably not a city break though.

Depends what you want to do really. What time of year? Seaside or not? We went for a weekend in skegness last year, you can get there by train and there were good bus links to the holiday parks and a nearby theme park. Not the most exciting place in the world though but those sort of caravan parks generally accept dogs. You could also do a similar holiday in North norfolk, there is a coast hopper bus route between hunstanton and wells.

Lake District? Good rail links and local buses

Forest Holidays have a holiday park in Blackwood Forest that is easily accessible. A direct train from Waterloo to Micheldever only takes an hour. They offer a complimentary shuttle bus from the station to the park on weekdays. We've had a brilliant stay at Blackwood. Some of the cabins are pet friendly and dogs are charged at £10 a night.
You could get the train to Portsmouth (less than two hours) and then get the ferry to the Isle of Wight. Portsmouth itself might be worth a one night stay as there is so much to see and do with two teenagers.
Or it only takes 1hr35 to get to Ashurst in the New Forest from Waterloo.
