New York plus road trip advice

My DP and I have booked flights to New York this August. We’ve got just over two weeks to enjoy the city plus do a road trip in the area. Ideally we would like to go to Niagara Falls and spend some time in Boston. I’ve been to New York and Boston before, but DP hasn’t. Boston is one of my favourite cities! I don’t mind seeing all the main sights again.

How feasible is this plan, and can anyone suggest any possible itineraries/other places to go? I’m not sure how long to stay in each place. We like seeing really random stuff on road trips so don’t mind staying in weird small towns!

We are aware it is going to be hot, but I’m a teacher in a special school with shorter holidays than teachers normally have, so it’s the only time we can go on long haul trips. We’ve also been to Japan in the summer so we can deal with heat.

New York to Boston is about a 4 hour drive although the longer route would be more scenic. Niagara has got to be another 8 hours so if you really want to go there, you'll have a really long day driving or you could do it over 3 days and stop at Syracuse.

I wouldn't stay any longer than you had to at Niagara.

Have a look at Roadtrippers.com
Use it to plan a route and it will give you ideas of things to see and do close by.

If you change your mind about Niagara, consider doing Cape Cod and the Maine coast as an alternative.

I assume you are intending to come back from NY which is a shame because coming back from Boston would make more sense. I would go to Boston from NY on the train. Look around Boston for a few days and then hire a car and go up the coast or go to Cape Cod. I am not sure Niagara Falls is worth it. I think the coast north of Boston is nicer and easier to get to. You can get the train back to NY. That would be less stressful than driving and would avoid traffic jams!

Yes, we’re flying back from New York. The flights were cheaper and we looked at getting the coach back from Boston as it’s really cheap. I’ve travelled on the coach before so know it isn’t too bad.

We’re not totally set on Niagara if other options are better. I’m keen to make the most of being able to drive now. When I travelled around the US before I wasn’t old enough to hire a car so had to use public transport to get everywhere.

I’ll take a look at the roadtrippers site. Thanks!

We did a road trip out of NY went all the way to Montreal, Toronto, Niagra (stay in Niagra on the lake, Niagra itself is a hole), and on to Detroit. The Henry Ford Museum, was worth the visit alone, it was amazing. Flew back to NY and home. We did it in the fall though, but it was a great trip

The train into NY from Boston gives a spectacular view of NY as you approach. It’s nicer than the coaches. No traffic jams.

I don’t think the itinerary posted above is doable in 2 weeks. Detroit??? Also why go into Canada? There are really great places in New England. Even in NY state!
