Flying into Gatwick - arrival time / connecting train

Friend is flying into Gatwick to visit us. It's a longhaul flight into north terminal. Does anyone know how long it will take to collect suitcase and get through passport control? I've said they will need to get shuttle to south terminal for train station.

Trying to work out which train to book as they are hourly. Don't want them hanging around airport but also if flight delayed or baggage delayed they might miss their booked train.

Pick them up in a car? If they are delayed, you have a problem. It should be about 1 hour to land, go through psssport control and get baggage. If they are not uk or Eu, it could be longer. Can they just roll up and get a ticket?
