It depends what you want to do in HK.
Star ferry, the peak, shopping at some markets, museum, wandering around the back streets in Central on HK Island - you can do all this in a couple of days. If you want to go to Disney, ocean park, Lantau Island via the cable car or out to Stanley add on an extra day.

Was wondering about shanghai, but would that be better in a China only trip ?
So confusing !
Did consider Singapore but then thought it might be a bit far.

It's about a four hour flight between Hong Kong and singapore so not that great a distance.

We did Hong Kong (3 days), Borneo (5 days) and Singapore (3 days). Was about 10 years ago but seem to recall the balance being about right

Hoi An in Vietnam. Stayed at the intercontinental Danag. Best hotel I have ever been to.
