Garda or Como

We're thinking of holidaying at either Como or Garda this summer.

We're not bothered about renting a car when on holiday and we like churches and anything historical.

Which would suit us best - Garda or Como? And can anyone recommend a specific town.

We'd rather stay in an older building as oppose to a purpose built modern hotel - any suggestions would be great.

Lake Garda is east of Lake Como, so it’s easier to get to from Venice and Verona. It’s just a 1.5-hour train ride (or 2-hour drive) from Venice, although Lake Garda isreally close from Verona: just a half an hour in the car, or 15 minutes on the train.
For a castle and Roman ruins, go to Lake Garda; for opulent villas and gardens, opt for Lake Como. Lake Garda's town of Sirmione may be touristy, but it also has two popular sights: the imposing Scaligero Castle and the ruins of an ancient Roman spa. But Lake Como has many sights of interest, too. It’s especially famous for its gorgeous villas and gardens.
Both lakes have their touristy and less-touristy spots—but it’s a little harder to get to the more tranquil areas in Lake Garda.
In general, Lake Como tends to feel a little more well-heeled than Lake Garda. While accommodation and meals at either lake is pricey, particularly in the high season, Lake Como also tends to be a little bit more expensive.

Thank you - I'm now leaning towards Garda ... although Como sounds lovely.

Hi,
We have been to Como four times and rented an apartment from a friend in Sala Comacina . It's just beautiful as is the whole lake . It's wonderful being able to hop on the ferry and get off at all the lovely Commune's and explore the Villa's in particular Villa balbienello in Lenno. It's about 1hr30 drive from from Milan . I'm not sure about Garda so I can't comment .
Have a lovely time x

Lake Garda is livelier than Lake Como, more bustling resorts with shops and cafes and traffic jams along the lakeside roads, although Como itself is very pleasant to visit.

We stayed in Malcesine and loved it.
