Dh and I are going to cardiff in 3 weeks time for a few days for our wedding anniversary. Does anyone have any recommendations of places to visit or things to do, only know there is great shops and cafes but would like to do something other than shop and eat Also good places for eating out. Thanks xx

Cardiff Castle is lovely. We did the guided tour which was well worth it. Loads of history in there and beautiful grounds too.

Will you have children with you?

Because I can't remember life before kids if you don't! However, re-reading your OP, I'm guessing not:
My top things would be:
Cardiff Castle. Guided tour. Beautiful interiors. My favourite bit is the roof garden at the top.
I would say the Museum but the top floor (the Art galleries) is closed at the moment. Good natural history stuff still open on the ground floor. Plus a small exhibition of Leonardo da Vinci. The Martin Tinney Gallery often has interesting stuff though and isn't far from the shops.

Where are you staying? What do you like? How far do you want to travel (eg to beaches??)

Aaah, a walk up Pen y Fan? Park just before the Storey Arms on the A470. Stunning views from the top.

The best places for eating out aren't in the city centre. I'd say for a small, just you and DH, celebration:
The Armless Dragon in Cathays.
Cafe Anna Bella in Pontcanna (is it still there?)
The Juboraj near Roath Park.
Le Gallois if you're really rich. In my dreams.

Lunch at the Park Plaza Hotel (good for shopping)

Or for a proper caff, the Welsh cafe just opposite the Castle. Loads of places in the Victorian Arcades.

Lots of places to eat in Cardiff Bay. More commercial there but very good. Cafe Naz, Valentino's, Pearl of the Orient? Don't go to the Spice Merchant. Grim.

um

are you perchance into beads?

because there is a great bead shop in one of the arcades, can't remember what its called but will try to remember

Gingerbear · 02/05/2007 07:06

What is the name of the Fish restaurant in Cardiff? - DH and I ate there, it was fab. There is a cold display where you choose your fish/ seafood and they take it away to cook as you like it (eg, grilled, garlic sauce etc)

Fillyjonk · 02/05/2007 07:16

where is it gb?

is it in the paved area with all the trees?

brain not woken up yet but if so, agree, fab

Gingerbear · 02/05/2007 07:25

It was a year ago - I can't really remember - You went upstairs and there were wooden floors. Think it might have been Spanish or Portuguese?

Fillyjonk · 02/05/2007 07:58

ah

dunno

the one i am thinking of is downstairs

was it in the bay?

Gingerbear · 02/05/2007 08:29

Le Monde

Aah, Here it is Fillyjonk - I asked DH - it is called Le Monde - there is another one in Bristol.
Highly recommended.

Fillyjonk · 02/05/2007 08:35

oh my WORD that looks fine

wedding anniversary this month...

was it busy-were reservations required?

Gingerbear · 02/05/2007 08:40

We went on a Friday night, so did book a table. Midweek is quieter.

PeachesMcLean · 02/05/2007 13:17

Ooh, I'd forgotten about Le Monde. I hasten to add I've never eaten in Le Gallois. I just peer longingly through the window, nose pressed against the glass, sniffing the air outside the kitchens.... (sob)

Califrau - you'll scare Beadmum off with things like that! Having said that we haven't heard from her since her OP and we've just waxed lyrical about the place. So maybe we've scared her off anyway!

That end of town is a bit of a building site, with the new shopping centre, but to be fair it wasn't the good shopping side of town anyway. Apart from Primark

Cardiff is a great place for shopping. Also, the bay is great - has some nice restaurants.
