Holiday ideas in August ?

We are a family of 5 kids 8,15,15.
Kids all like totally different things .
I have a budget of 5k and need some ideas.
Main thing is no camping or road trips, also need at least 2 rooms interconnected with a bed each ( kids will not share !) or self catering is fine .
I know we have left it late but dh will not get involved.
I thought Rome and Sorrento would be good or Rome and Lake Gada but availability is poor as they are so popular .

Any suggestions would be great

Rome to the Amalfi coast is a pretty easy train ride (train down to Naples). I’d personally skip Sorrento - very overbuilt & there are much nicer towns along the coast (I like Amalfi - regular buses from Sorrento train station). Rome to Lake Garda is a bit of a trek - how about flying into Verona, a couple of days there & then a bus out to one of the Garda towns (again, regular buses from the train station). For another option - how about Sicily - fly into Catania, 2 days there then an 1/2 hour train journey to Taormina (we did that last summer & fitted in Syracuse too). Can’t help on campsites but we always self cater in apartments - booking.com has s good selection and you can usually pay on the day.

Love the idea of Sicily , defo not camping though !

I would look for a private let maybe try the Algarve although it might be a case of what is available.
Or perhaps a private let in Malta this years city of Culture.

Am totally with you on camping Pinkpeanut -any holiday you come back from really pleased to see your bathroom is not a holiday! Had no problem finding lots of apartments in Sicily last year on booking.com. Only downside is no pool but we’re happy to swim in the sea. Valletta (the capital city of Malta & current city of culture) is an attractive place - Malta can be a bit hit & miss with some great places but also some godawful towns.

I’m struggling with the no pool point but loving Taormina.

Costa del la luz hotel islantilla has interconnecting rooms. That's southern Spain next to Portugal x

SJane45S · 04/02/2018 18:30

Taormina was fab - have a look & see if you can find an apartment with a pool. I didn’t look tbh - we’re fine without & the beach at Taormina has a beautiful connecting island (Isola Bella) & we just swam around there & had sunset takeaway pizza on the beach

Pinkpeanut27 · 04/02/2018 20:18

Southern Spain is my next stop thanks

Avoid sorrento at all cost in August with kids . It's manic and I didn't find it child friendly ( hardly any public parks etc)

Pinkpeanut27 · 04/02/2018 21:00

Ok Sorrento is off the list ! We went there one June without kids and it was glorious

Just to add amalfi isn't great for kids either as it's very hilly. It is beautiful though. There is a Euro camp just outside of Florence which is amazing .

From what I can remember you can stay in a static or villa .

It's a fantastic base for Florence and Pisa.

Pinkpeanut27 · 04/02/2018 21:28

Amalfi also off the list then , not sure about Euro. Camp as I remember my sister went - very hot and no air con

There was definitely air con in ours. You can pay or basic or upgrade to a higher standard but even the basic has air con.

I've booked a villa in Spain , one near the centre and beach . I have an age gap and I've got a car so plan to go to water parks etc . I used villa plus .

Pinkpeanut27 · 05/02/2018 10:02

Where about in Spain ?

OP posts:
sportyfool · 05/02/2018 12:03

Tr one I've booked is in Calpe , I wasn't too fussed about where it was but wanted one close to the centre and beach but still private . I looked at so many options for us as we really needed 3 rooms and this seemed the best option .

sportyfool · 05/02/2018 12:04

Everyone loves a water park and we may go to portaventura too ( we have stayed there before too but when ds was a baby )

KaliforniaDreamz · 05/02/2018 12:06

I've used villaplus and stayed in gorgeous villas in Mallorca. Kids will swim all day and when bored go to a waterpark. easy 2 hour flight, great weather, lovely place. Hire boats etc. simple easy holiday.

Rome will be unbearably hot in August.

alphajuliet123 · 05/02/2018 14:30

Take them to Barcelona, it's an amazing city for kids - beach, Parc Guell, cable car, musical fountain, Gaudi etc. Stay 2 or 3 days then head further along the coast to one of the resorts. Or consider flying into one airport and out of another. A friend did Nice to Barcelona and got trains in between stopping here and there along the way, we are thinking of doing similar but Nice to Pisa (bit shorter - about a 5/6 hour train ride between the two)

KaliforniaDreamz · 05/02/2018 14:35

Yes i know what you mean - maybe you need a Neilson's holiday then- with teen clubs for hanging out? Watersports etc

sportyfool · 05/02/2018 14:37

Have a look at portaventura . It's a lovely theme park but has a hotel on site with a lovely pool etc but on the doorstep has the theme park and water park . I guess at 15 they can go on their own . Salou is nearby and has a beach etc.. we have been 3 x and it's lovely .
