Hello

Following some excellent advice on here, we're busy planning our summer holiday to France. We're going to Megeve and Chamonix with our car and would like to add on another week with some sunshine / relaxation / culture and stuff for the DCs to do (age 9 and 7).

I am desperate for some sun and DH doesn't want to drive too far.
Our options so far are:

  • driving down to Avignon / The Luberon, which will be super busy and not sure how much how much there will be for the kids.
  • heading west and finding somewhere between Lyon, Bergerac and Limgoes.
  • DH is keen to forget all these plans and take a slow trip back with lots of interesting stop-overs.

It's difficult to find a good compromise between kids and us...

Does anyone have any experience or advice. We don't want to do much driving, but I am keen on some heat and rays....

avignon will be more reliable weather as thats south of france, but central france will often be hot too, but you might get the odd day its not as warm. We stay in Limousin /Charente region every year which is only about 5/6 hours from calais (as opposed to closer to 12 for avignon) and there are loads of lake and river beaches etc, and we always enjoy it

Thanks Branleuse (good username), that sounds much better. Do you mind if I ask where you go?

I'd head for Burgundy. It's not far, right direction towards home but is often really hot. Dijon is lovely. We stayed near Noyers once and there were inland beaches near lakes and rivers that were good for families. Lots of places like that in France.

Lyon is fab. I lived there for about 10 months so am biased. Weather isn't amazing but can get quite hot in summer sometimes. Lots of interesting places to visit e.g. the resistance museum, the fine arts museum, Tete d'Or park which has a small free zoo in it, outdoor swimming baths (Centre Nautique Tony Bertrand). Fab city.
