Best/worst city breaks

Saw a similar thread recently and wondered what are people's best/worst city break destinations?
I loved most of the typical places Paris, Rome, Venice and so on. However, I think a lot of people will disagree with me here I was very unimpressed with Amsterdam. Apart from some nice architecture and Anne Franks house. I just didn't see what everyone else sees. I'm not a prude the red light district didn't bother me. I fell asleep on the most boring river cruise ever. It just all seemed abit dull. I find it strange because I am not one not to enjoy places.
Is it just me?

I love and would visit again in a minute

Rome
Monaco
Monte Carlo
Sydney

I didn’t enjoy and wouldn’t go back unless a specific reason like a wedding

Paris
Florence
Melbourne

I hated

Pisa

Of all the places I've Ever been to, I can't say I've ever found any of them a wasted experience. They've all been interesting in their own way.

Having said that, I'm not sure I'd ever want to go back to Stettin. Sorry Stettin!

We had our main family holiday in Amsterdam last year, as requested by DD2, who is a Van Gogh fan. All four of us had a great time there - we did lots of different things: art museums, Anne Frank, a cat cafe, a bike trip along the river, sitting in the park, some shopping in the Nine Streets - it was really our thing.

HRTpatch · 27/01/2018 10:39

I wasn't keen on Berlin

Branleuse · 27/01/2018 10:46

I hated Geneva, but was only a day trip

BothersomeCrow · 27/01/2018 10:53

I liked Amsterdam - spent a day in the Rijksmuseum, half days in Van Gogh and Stedlijk galleries, lots of wandering round canals and eating pancakes and rijstafel, and a diamond-cut thing show. If you don't like art it's probably less impressive. River cruise was mildly interesting.

Cologne was nice for a long weekend including trip to nearby palace, but not longer.

Verona was a lot for two days; three would have been better. Florence, Venice, Lake Garda, Istanbul could all fill well over a week.

Abu Dhabi and Dubai were incredibly boring. Glitzy soulless shopping malls. Good food but that's it.

Branleuse · 27/01/2018 10:55

I loved amsterdam, beautiful buildings, loads of history, stroopwaffels and smokes. Whats not to like?

Mrsfloss · 27/01/2018 10:59

I loved Venice, Rome, Tallin, Dubrovnik, Milan

Couldn’t see the fuss about Florence

Newmummy87123 · 27/01/2018 11:13

Branleuse I suppose that's what I'm actually trying to work out. I can't quite work out why I didn't like it. I think maybe I went with too high expectations. It's very unlike me to be negative about a place.
A lot of people tell me they hated Paris. I can actually understand their reasons. However I still love it.
Definitely agree nothing is ever a wasted experience.

Prague was fab, also love Amsterdam, Bruges (at xmas) and Barcelona. Love most German cities I’ve been to too.

New York is fab too.

Was least impressed by Copenhagen. Was nice enough, but bit dull and so expensive.

Honeycombcrunch · 27/01/2018 11:31

Amsterdam is much more interesting if you explore it on foot or by tram rather than a river cruise. I loved the art museums and would definitely go back there.

Archfarchnad · 27/01/2018 11:46

OK, HRT, what was the problem with Berlin? It's not the cliched German cutesy central-European architecture and vibe, that's true, but it doesn'tclaim to be either. Go to Munich if you want that. Was it that le something else?

EveryDayIsLikeMonday · 27/01/2018 12:22

I loved Amsterdam but thought Sydney was very over rated and could have been any where in the world.
I was surprised at how lovely Malaga and Palma are despite being so near many over-developed tourist resorts.

AnnaMagnani · 27/01/2018 12:32

I loved Amsterdam but am an art and history obsessive. Loved the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, Rembrandts House, Portuguese synagogue and hidden church.

However I loved The Hague much much more. If we went again we'd stay in the Hague and travel in by train.

Bruges was nice but a bit chocolate box and if we hadn't seen In Bruges before hand, I don't think we'd have liked in so much. Plus DH got food poisoning.

Spent 9 days in Venice, didn't see everything we wanted to. Amazing. Same for Rome, 2 weeks, packed stuff in, still loads more to do.

Munich is a lovely city break both for summer and for Christmas markets.

Wasn't expecting much from Warsaw but enjoyed it more than Krakow.

Budapest is great, lots of fantastic food esp cake, plus amazing musical experiences.

Littlelambpeep · 27/01/2018 12:37

Loved
Amsterdam
Gdansk
Copenhagen
Budapest
Krakow
Cologne
Venice
Porto (loved!)
Rome

Didn't like Moscow. Loved the architecture but not the atmosphere or vibe at all!!

frenchfancy · 27/01/2018 12:39

Love Naples, Paris, Malaga, Lisbon

Unimpressed by Bruges and Florence

LockedOutOfMN · 27/01/2018 12:41

Brussels is nice.

TossDaily · 27/01/2018 12:43

Adored Amsterdam.
Love Paris, Rome, Venice, Edinburgh.
Like NYC.

AnnaMagnani · 27/01/2018 12:47

Forgot - Madrid was excellent but without going on a tapas tour on our first night, I don't think we would have got the hang of tapas at all. Absolutely loads to do, plus lots of places in day trip distance.

Shopgirl1 · 27/01/2018 12:49

I loved:
Munich, Berlin, Vienna, Salzburg, Innsbruck, Stockholm, Barcelona.

I like most German cities, dying to get to Hamburg and Lübeck.

I found Prague overrated and don’t think much of Madrid, I’ve been there numerous times as I lived in Spain and I just never like it.

LeMesmer · 27/01/2018 22:23

I really enjoyed London, Amsterdam, Bruges, Paris, Rome, Munich, Stockholm (especially Stockholm). In fact there are very few cites I don't like.

However, I really dislike Milan and Lyon.

The first time I went to Lucerne I didn't enjoy it at all, but went back years later and was surprised by how I liked it. Sometimes it is worth giving a place another go.

somewhereovertherain · 28/01/2018 16:09

Brussels, Stockholm, Rome, Copenhagen, Cologne, Maastricht, Nante

All good.

SmilingButClueless · 28/01/2018 16:16

I didn’t like either Amsterdam or Marseille. Both felt a bit seedy / tacky, although some of the sights were interesting. Oh, and Norwich was just a bit dull.

I really liked both Oslo and Reykjavik, despite neither having “showstopping” visitor attractions. Also really liked York.

FeedtheTree · 28/01/2018 16:27

I love Amsterdam. But then I could spend a week just looking at Van Gogh's paintings. And I love sitting on boats watching the world drift by. And dark, snug cafes with hot chocolate and coffee. If you add Ann Frank's house, the Rijksmuseum, the secret church, the flower barges, cycle rides etc, that's a great weekend imo, though I wouldn't want to go back to the red light district. So depressing.

RusholmeRuffian · 28/01/2018 16:58

Loved:

Rome
Amsterdam
Barcelona
Athens
Berlin
Seville
New York
Philadelphia
Boston
Savannah
Las Vegas

Didn't love:

Paris
Miami
Atlanta
Atlantic City

PoppyTaylor · 28/01/2018 20:17

I actually agree with you about Amsterdam! I've been twice, the first when I was a kid and then second in my 20s. I found parts of the city are very pretty and Anne Frank's house was excellent but I didn't have the love for it that everyone else seems to have!

I've really enjoyed many city breaks, such as; Budapest, Prague, Paris, Venice, Barcelona, Berlin, Vienna, Dubrovnik, Brussels, Rome and plenty more (luckily!).

Places I've not enjoyed quite as much or maybe just not felt lived up to the huge hype; Zagreb, Amsterdam, Florence, Pisa and I also didn't enjoy Barcelona the first time I went but loved it the second time. So maybe they're all worth a second shot!
