Rarotonga, Cook Islands

We (me, DH and 2 boys aged 10 and 6) are considering going to Rarotonga this August for 3 or 4 weeks. Does anyone have any tips about good places to stay? We're looking for a family villa on the beach. Also what is the weather like? I know it's 'Winter' but is it still a nice time to visit? This is a precursor to possibly taking a few months out next year and going to Rarotonga for a more prolonged period (up to 6 months). Does anyone know the legal requirements for this and where I should go to starting making enquiries? We are UK citizens. DH and I spent a few weeks there about 15 years ago so know a little about the island (but where we stayed before is not suitable for children). Thanks.

I was there about 15 years ago too backpacking ! :)

Have you got the up to date Lonely Planet ? They will tell you about weather and different standards of accommodation.

I was there backpacking about 15 years ago too! Learnt to dive whilst I was there. Sure it’s changed significantly since I was there so can’t really advise, but is a lovely island.
