Hi guys! Hoping you lovely lot could give me some ideas on where OH and I can go to break up the winter in December! I was thinking Mexico or Thailand but have done both before! Would love to hear your ideas

Jamaica - good fun, so much to do you could not sit down for 2 weeks or you could absolutely chill

Antigua - stunningly beautiful not a lot to do

Barbados - in between the two above still good fun but more relaxed than Jamaica but so pricey these days.

glitterbiscuits · 20/01/2018 21:03

Maybe check the latest travel advice before you consider Jamaica.

Tinkofhousepan · 20/01/2018 21:17

Thanks for the recommendations. Oh doesn't want to do Jamaica at the moment as it's supposed to be quite dangerous out there currently! I suggested it to him earlier. Will definitely check out Barbados

Definitely Barbados. Lovely at the minute.

Haven’t found it expensive really. Though it could be

Jassmells · 20/01/2018 21:29

Oh I hadn't seen the news re Jamaica just googled it, what a shame hope it doesn't return to how it was in the 80s. That was the whole reason they built Montego Bay airport to keep away from the trouble. Shame. Hopefully it calms down and there will be some cracking deals ;)

jemmstar1980 · 20/01/2018 21:34

I would second Barbados - but what type of things do you like to do on holiday?

Jassmells · 20/01/2018 21:34

OP equally interested in your opinion on thailand as is on my list...

BubblesBuddy · 20/01/2018 22:12

As I have just said on another thread, hire a boat with a skipper and cook and go to the BVIs. Holidays will never get better then this! Alternatively hire a Villa on Virgin Gorda. The BVIs are small, perfectly formed and you get to snorkel off the boat or off the beach. Ferries connect the islands and there are no big AI hotels! Yay!

BubblesBuddy · 20/01/2018 22:16

BVIs aside, South Africa is good in December. Cape Town and the Garden Route would be fantastic. There are other African countries that would work and you could look at a safari and beach combination.

You could also try Brazil, Argentina or Costa Rica and the southern states of America that are too hot in the summer!

somewhereovertherain · 20/01/2018 22:33

We’re looking at Honduras for next winter or different Caribbean island like st Maarten or the Bahamas. All depends what flight deals we can get.

As Barbados this time was fairly cheap.

Tinkofhousepan · 20/01/2018 23:03

Hi guys! Thanks for the ideas! I am a keen scuba diver so ideally want to go somewhere which is good for That! And I like laying on a beach with a book! jass I loved Thailand. We did a few days in Bangkok and did the floating markets etc which were fab! And then spent a week in koh tao and a week in koh samui. I really recommend it!

Belize - friendly country loads to see and do. definitely not Jamaica - who wants to stay on a gated and guarded compound on holiday.

ShanghaiDiva · 21/01/2018 01:00

I live in China (would not recommend in December !) and some of my favourites in SE Asia:
Vietnam - Hanoi (bit cool then, around 20 degrees) ha long bay, HCMC City and nha trang for beach/snorkelling - but need to check weather. Also phu quoc Island is another option.
Cambodia - temples at Angkor combined with beach at sihanoukville (sp?)
What about the Philippines?
Indonesia is great for diving, but weather is not the best in December.

LinoleumBlownapart · 21/01/2018 11:12

I live in Brazil, I wouldn't recommend it in December. Hottest time of the year and it rains A LOT! Argentina and South Africa, or most of Africa and Central/South America South of the equator would be stifling in the summer too, unless you go really far south. I would say somewhere just north of the equator to give you a pleasant December climate. Caribbean Islands, Southern US States like Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina.

Unless of course you like 38+ degree heat, in which case go for it!

BubblesBuddy · 21/01/2018 15:10

The Pampas and southern Argentina are fine in Winter. You cannot do that part of Argentina in the summer! Cape Town is the furthest south you can go in Africa. It’s fine to go in December. However not sure about diving other than in shark cages!

As for snorkelling or scuba diving, the BVIs really is the place to go! There are wrecks and great reefs. It’s safe and diving outfits are good. (So says DH).

We went to Costa Rica last year just after Christmas. Wonderful safe country . Plenty to do alone with laying on the beach . We went the Pacific side and travelled from the north to the south . The north has prettier beaches but the south has whales !😁 BA fly direct along with Thomson
