Mallorca or Croatia?

Piggywaspushed · 17/01/2018 07:18

I can be terribly indecisive and am stuck in a more of procrastination over booking a holiday in August. Plus, DH and I do have different ideas about what constitutes a holiday.

I spent ages looking for 10 day holidays but really would rather go to a villa which tends to cancel out 10 days : we have done 10 days before with 4 days caravan, 4 days villa but I have found the whole thing stressful.

Anyway, I think we have eventually found a nice looking villa near Puerto Pollnesa versus a nice looking villa near Rovinj (although it appears to be just off the main road in : does anyone know what that is like?)

We have been to Mallorca before, many years ago and know It is nice. Croatia looks lovely but the beaches bother me and I wonder what there is to do and see and what the roads are like.

DH likes to go somewhere new and likes to drive around. He quite likes the idea of a hotel and not being stuck in a villa every night (I like to just sit in shorts and a t shirt and drink a few glasses of wine on the patio and maybe go out one night) If I could find a villa walking distance to a nice resort I'd be very happy but these are like hen's teeth. We got stung last year with Owners Direct so have stuck to James/ Villa Plus.

Two DCs surly 17 year old and a 14 year old. Neither are into making friends, clubs etc so like a villa. DS1 does A level Spanish but didn't speak a word of it last summer!
Flight times to both are acceptable, rather than great.

Any thoughts on pros and cons of each??

Any help in making a decision, or joining in the havering welcome!

Sandy beaches, Hey?

Hmmm... interesting.

Don't think we would do car free though...

How about Menorca ?

The accomodation is cheaper I think.

Just booked a detached 3 bed villa with private infinity pool and sea view for 11 nights in June.

Lovely small island to drive around. Nothing too far from the airport. Could be too quiet for teens though I suppose. My young adults are not invited Smile

AnyFucker · 20/01/2018 14:57

Sorry, meant to say the villa was less than £2k

Piggywaspushed · 20/01/2018 15:17

Menorca is lovely but we have been there twice!

Looking on Villa Plus they actually look about the same price as Mallorca.

AnyFucker · 20/01/2018 16:26

Villa plus is expensive and they only do 7/14 day stays, don't they ?

dotdotdotmustdash · 20/01/2018 16:35

The only package holiday abroad I ever went on as a child was to Yugoslavia in 1981. The village is now in Croatia and is called Vrsar. I remember is as being absolutely beautiful and the water was amazingly clear. There were no beaches, just volcanic rock outcrops which had cement platforms to sit on. You had to wear jelly shoes all the time but once you were in the water - stunning!

I would love to go back some day. My Dh has a screen-saver on his laptop of a place in Croatia he plans to visit, it's called Hvar and looks gorgeous.

We did Majorca last year (twice!) and loved it. First time villa and it was brilliant. Pool to ourselves, WiFi, outdoor bbq, lidl near by and hire car included.

This is where we stopped near Pollensa

James Villas Coste de na llucia Reviews are annoying for Villas, we couldn’t find many either. But really loved this villa and would go back in a heart beat.

percypig · 20/01/2018 16:46

I also really like Menorca, but prefer Croatia - we’ve been to Istria and the Dalmatian Coast. Try myistria for villas in Istria or feriehome for some in the Omis area south of Split.

percypig · 20/01/2018 16:47

Also, (and this is v outing if anyone knows me IRL) we have done both Croatia and mainland Spain at half term and had lovely weather - not hot but really pleasant and since it’s late season the villas are v cheap - our last one would be miles out of our price range in the summer.

Piggywaspushed · 20/01/2018 16:53

Thanks appraiser, I'll look that one up.

Yes anyfucker 7- 14 nights. I can't find anywhere that does 10: even Owners Direct etc have changeover days

See appraiser that looks nice but £500 above DH's top budget!

Appraiser · 20/01/2018 17:03

Yeah but it was AWESOME 😎
The car hire itself for 4 people is about £500
We ate out only 3 times and the rest of the time cooked on the bbq with food from lidl which cost €114 for the week!

poshme · 20/01/2018 17:13

We flew to Trieste and then drive to Croatia.
Could you stay in a hotel for a few days, and then villa a week?

We loved Croatia. (And Trieste- spent 2 days there)

Piggywaspushed · 20/01/2018 17:18

The one I like is Villa Plus so no car hire :(

Have you tried Trip Advisor for flexible start dates/number of nights ? Also booking.com.

We booked with Agni Travel.

percy your post is not remotely outing....thousands on thousands of people go on half term holidays every year

ChiaraRimini · 20/01/2018 18:56

OP, Lopud island is so small you don't need a car but there are golf buggies for people with mobility problems. I booked with booking.com, no problems with flexible dates. We are going for 10 days.

ChiaraRimini · 20/01/2018 18:58

Btw 4 of us are going for 10 nights in school hols. Flights and (basic) accommodation £2250.

Piggywaspushed · 20/01/2018 20:06

Chiara it's more to do with feeling trapped. DH (and me to an extent) like to get out and about a bit.

£2250 is good price!

I have just found a lovely place in Alcudia

www.ownersdirect.co.uk/accommodation/p6916876

But , by God, the flights to Mallorca are adding about £1700!!

Niiice

Smidge001 · 20/01/2018 20:25

Just wanted to add that Croatia is amazing. Like other posters, I first went on a package holiday as a child when it was still Yugoslavia, but I went again this year with my Australian DH. I was a bit worried he wouldn't rate the beaches, but he couldn't get over how beautiful it was and just how clear the water was! You can see shadows of the little rowing boats on the sea bed, it was truly gorgeous. We went to Hvar (gorgeous!), Brac (great for families) and Split. I'm going to take him back and go to Dubrovnik as I know he'll love that too.

Appraiser · 20/01/2018 20:58

If you fancied apartment hotel, this place was brill too Club Del Sol

Piggywaspushed · 20/01/2018 21:33

I am going to sleep on it!

Thanks for all the input!

Update.

Had a stressful morning as I hate these things but I have booked flights to Mallorca and done the weird request a booking thing on Owners Direct. I don't like that but apparently it is more secure than the bank transfer method. It was nice to be able to pay by credit card now the fees have gone!

This is the place:
www.ownersdirect.co.uk/accommodation/p8085729?uni_id=3413807#calendar

The previous one I linked to wanted cash payment on arrival. Not getting into that malarkey!!

So, if it all works out this will be just over £2000 - a hell of a lot cheaper then the Villa Plus place I wanted!

Looks great

Appraiser · 21/01/2018 11:06

Ooh it looks lovely, I’m jealous now as I loved Majorca last year (hence two holidays there 😳)

Restaurant recommendations:
Can Cuarassa you’ll need to book, v nice
www.lacabanamallorca.com looks nothing from the outside but fab good value food

Other recommendations:
Alcudia old town for breakfast, a fair few bakeries, all fresh and just very quaint and quiet with lots of local produce. They have markets on too so find out the day the market is on, it’s not far from where you’re staying.

Old town Pollensa was nice too but we had a 5yo and walking up and down steps around lovely little quaint streets with home made type shops was her idea of hell she was a turd that day Again, there’s markets etc, so lovely if you and DH wanted to go out
