Mallorca or Menorca?

I want to book a 2 week holiday in early July for myself, DH and our two DS (4.5 and 7). We have narrowed it down to either Mallorca or Menorca because I don't want to do too much driving (DH not able to drive at present) and the flight needs to be do-able in 3hrs or less.

Ideally what we want is a villa with a pool, 2-3 bedrooms and some garden space, within walking/short drive of beach, shops, cafes etc. 1hr or less to the airport and not too crowded or super busy. Not a 'full on' resort experience but equally not totally in the middle of nowhere. Our budget is circa £4-5,000 for the two weeks (inc flights and car hire)

Puerta Pollensa in Mallorca is gorgeous- beaches are long, gentle waves and shallow clear waters until a long way out. Plenty of bars and restaurants. Not as busy as some of the bigger areas and just under and hour to the airport.

Thanks kateskates, I had been looking at that area. Is it less developed than the East of the Island?

Yes there's no high rise, it's super kid friendly and the streets are small and winding

It's a short taxi to Pollensa old town too, and that is a great day out

Second Puerto Pollensa. It's lovely. And Majorca on the whole is so family friendly.

Menorca is beautiful, pretty much every area is quiet and family friendly, no nightclubs or 18-30 holidays, lovely beaches and restaurants, we love it there and have been going since dc were little.

We're booked to go to Puerto Pollensa in May for the first time as it looks lovely. If any of you are into cycling apparently thats very good there as that what convinced DH on the island. I was convinced as it looks lovely and DD will love the pool. We booked through James Villas bit pricey but they do look good.

We love Menorca, a really pretty Island, very easy to drive around if you choose to do so.

Check out Bartle Holidays, we’ve stayed in a lovely villa hired through them, and we are going back again this year.

We had our holiday in Mallorca this summer (just me, DP & DS5). We stayed in Sollér, in an apartment on the edge of the town, from where you could walk up in the mountains, catch the tram down to the beach at Port de Sollér, or just hang around town and mooch between the bars and the ice cream parlour. There’s a gallery stuffed with modernist art, and the railway station has (free) galleries stuffed with Picasso and Miro prints.

It’s on the north-west coast of the island, and there’s a (picturesque 1930s wooden) train from the centre of Palma. It is one of the more obvious day trips for folk staying on the resorts on the west side, but they tended to arrive at lunchtime and head off by late afternoon, so we mostly siesta’d through the times when town was really busy.

The whole thing was designed around my pathological avoidance of driving on the wrong side of the road, but I imagine that if you were prepared to drive even a little bit it would pay off.

I’d choose Majorca/Mallorca every time. We’ve been a couple of times and really enjoyed. Was a bit underwhelmed by Menorca, but maybe because we went once in may and weather wasn’t great.

weekendninja · 10/01/2018 09:17

It would be Menorca for me. Whilst both islands are pretty easy to navigate, Menorca is as easy as it gets. You could have a beautiful villa in a lovely location within a 10 minute drive of the airport. Also, if you have a car you can find the most amazing coves all around the coastline.

I prefer Majorca / Mallorca out of the two. Menorca is beautiful, but it's very quiet.

Purplerain101 · 12/01/2018 14:42

I’ve been to both and prefer Menorca for a quieter holiday, and Majorca for a holiday with more to do.
Cala n porter is a nice resort in menorca with a lovely beach and some nice restaurants
