has anyone taken young kids to SA? Do they need anti malaria tablets?

I'm taking my two dd, will be 5 and three to South Africa to see my sister. She says they don't need anti malaria tablets but some of the info on the web puts her area as a risk area. I remember my mum trying to get me to take the pills and I was a complete nightmare. Also does anyone know if they do it in a liquid form.

As it so happens it's Africa Malaria day today!
What area does your sister live in? I don't know about liquid form but there is a chewable form for kids, see www.malarone.com

If she lives in a low risk area, then just a mosquito repellent applied every night should do the trick.

It depends on which area she lives in as well as your plans to travel around SA. In itself SA is not high risk.

Agree - depends on the area. It's only really parts of Kwa-zulu natal and northern parts of the Kruger park type area that are malaria areas.

I took my children to SA when they were 7 months old and again, when they were 2 and 3months old. Didn't take any malaria tabs - and didn't even use mozzie spray as there really weren't any around
