Where is good to go - avoiding loads of teens getting drunk, Brits abroad looking for curry?

Family of six, need a pool, some form of day trip, beach and a town to wander into.

Any ideas?

I have been to Kefalonia several times, Zakynthos and Lefkada. Zakynthos is lovely but because Laganas is there, you do have a high risk of running into the pissed Brits abroad thing - I still remembering driving through it and a little voice from the back seat asking what a strip club was 🙈🙊

Kefalonia is gorgeous - small towns and some beautiful beaches. The capital, Argostoli, is pretty for a wander round and has a lovely big harbour where turtles turn up hopefully to hang around the fishing boats. We stay in Lassi, which is a bit of a tourist strip, but has a beautiful beach. And touristy here really means just loads of restaurants and several supermarkets which sell some English brand as well as Greek!

Oh that sounds great thank you. We want to try somewhere new , so avoiding France and Italy this time.

The chania area of Crete or the Peloponnese are both worth looking at.

DrRisotto · 02/01/2018 21:47

I'm interested in going to Greece for the first time this year so will take advice on board too

Ohyesiam · 02/01/2018 21:55

I came on to say Chania area of Crete too. Chania is magical, well worth wandering around for a couple of non beach afternoons.

goose1964 · 02/01/2018 21:56

Period on Rhodes, it's a young family/older couples place. It has a great beach an there are plenty of bars with pools so you can relax whilst the kids play. It is only a short bus ride from Lindos if you fancy something a bit more lively

goose1964 · 02/01/2018 21:57

Sorry Pefkos not period

TeaAndToast85 · 02/01/2018 21:58

Santorini is lovely

TeaAndToast85 · 02/01/2018 21:59

We stayed at the Acqua Vatos hotel in Kamari - it checks off the stuff on your list. X

We’re going to Corfu for the second time this year. The people are lovely, weather is lovely and lots of options trip wise.

Lovely beaches and small family ran hotels and apartments. We go self catering and loads of options for eating too

SouthWestmom · 02/01/2018 22:55

Oh this is really helpful thank you.

I did find somewhere but the review said it was over run with cats and dogs! Otherwise perfect. (Selini apartments?)

Another for Kefalonia, we love it. Small, friendly and beautiful it’s a lovely place.

LoafEater · 02/01/2018 23:05

I second Pefkos. It's lovely.

sausagerollsrock · 02/01/2018 23:08

Most, if not all of the Greek islands are lovely. It's our fave place. Just make sure you do your research to make sure you don't end up where the party's at! Grin
My favourite island is probably Rhodes followed very closely by Zante. Neither were party holidays just me and dh.

SouthWestmom · 03/01/2018 00:11

I'm really worried about ending up party central.....

Maybe Malta?

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 03/01/2018 09:12

Honestly, nowhere in Kefalonia is party central Grin

Lassi is typical tourist fare in terms of gorgeous beaches, shallow sea with an exclusive (huge) swimming area roped off that the boats can’t go in to and a long road lined with restaurants (mostly Greek) and shops. No clubs, loud music, vomiting in the street...

Fiskardo is even more traditional but less to do there with DCs as it doesn’t have the same beach facilities.

Days out on Kefalonia - trip to the underground lake, the caves, various monasteries, lots of boat trips around the island and to neighbouring islands (we did a beautiful one to Ithaka, but you can also go to Zakynthos)...

If you want real peace and quiet on a Greek island, head to Ithaka or Skiathos but there’s not quite as much to do on either island - it would be very much a pool and beach holiday.

Taffeta · 03/01/2018 09:15

NE Corfu
Kefalonia
Skiathos but not Skiathos Town

SouthWestmom · 03/01/2018 13:16

Brilliant thank you:

I'm going to book with James Villas I think

So we are going to Cyprus. Found a lovely resort near to Paphos and we don't need a car.

Greece was comparatively expensive and a lot of places needed a car - I don't mind driving but it's the hassle of renting and worrying about damage and parking I wanted to avoid.

leccybill · 05/01/2018 10:24

Where in Cyprus did you book, OP? I'm keen on there.
Finding Greece and Cyprus to be very expensive this year (we can only go in August).
Tempted to go back to Turkey - much better value for money.

SouthWestmom · 05/01/2018 10:39

Near Paphos via British airways. There were several really nice sites within a few miles of the airport and also with beaches and villages in walking distance.

I was surprised at the cost of Greece plus I was worried I'd get it wrong and end up either middle of a foam party or miles from nowhere!
