Shes going to New York on Thursday and wants to know what there rules are on size of hand luggage.

Also will she be able to take on a bottle of water?

No.
Liquids

Some liquids (e.g. gels, lotions, pastes, liquid cosmetics, foams and foodstuffs) are now allowed through airport security check points. There are the following restrictions on the quantity of liquids:
Liquids may only be carried within separate containers each of which with a capacity not greater than 100ml.
These containers must be brought to the airport contained in a single, transparent, re-sealable plastic bag, which itself must not exceed 1 litre in capacity (approximately 20cms x 20cms). The contents of the plastic bag must fit comfortably and the bag must be sealed.
Each passenger may carry only one such bag of liquids. The bag must be presented for examination.
Liquids that can not be placed inside the re-sealable bag must be packed into the hold luggage and checked in. Liquids of any amount can still be carried in luggage checked into the aircraft hold.

Please note 'Liquids' include:
All drinks, including water, soup, syrups
Creams, lotions, oils, perfumes, mascara etc
Sprays and pressurized containers including shaving foam and spray deodorants
Pastes, including toothpastes
Gels, including hair and shower gel
Any other solutions and items of similar consistency

I went last yr and had a lip gloss removed even though technically it was allowed

Nbg · 24/04/2007 14:34

I thought it was ok so long as you drank it front of them.

Obviously not!

Wonder if it say about luggage size on their site?

Cabin baggage must be no larger than: 56cm length, 36cm width & 23cm depth (including wheels, handles, side pockets etc). The maximum it can weigh is 6kgs if travelling Economy or Premium Economy and 8kgs if travelling Upper Class. Also, if you also have a handbag, this must fit into the one item of handluggage mentioned above. You cannot take it through separately.

Piffle · 24/04/2007 14:36

that's only for baby milkI thought

PestoMonster · 24/04/2007 14:37

You can take lipgloss, but it must be no more than 100mls (wouldn't be anyway), and must be in a re-sealable clear plastic bag about 8cm square.

PestoMonster · 24/04/2007 14:39

By the way, you can pick these clear bags up at the airport. They hand them out free. Any liquids/pastes gels you want to take in handluggage must be put into one and must not be more than 100mls for each item. You can buy bottled water airside from one of the shops which you are then allowed to take on board.

Right, thats brilliant.
Thank you

Tell her not to worry and to look forward to her choc ice (which they serve in the afternoon to go with the movies!).

As long as the hand luggage is not looking way too big they don't really mind. The weight is more of an issue with them (6 kilos for pax in economy and premium economy).

Economy seats on Virgin are not great, they are certainly not well padded.

Virgin are not actually all that great either regarding water and drinks - you only get one with your meal. Pax need to go to the galley to get extra water.

Melsy cannot take any water or liquids more than 100ml through security but you can buy drinks on the other side. However, my son was told at the departure gate to finish off his drink (water) before boarding the aircraft.

If a pax is going Premium Economy or Upper Class they should hand over a Fasttrack voucher which will enable usage of the Fasttrack security line (this tends to be a lot shorter than the other line).

Food on the plane is not much to write home about (apart from the nice GU choc mousse though!) - would suggest she eats at the airport before boarding.

We did not get choc ice with the movies!!. Think we got a tub of vanilla ice cream instead.

The main things she needs to do on the plane is to relax and ensure that her visa waiver and customs form (she will in total have two forms to complete) are fully completed and correct before arriving into US immigration.

Oh and if she goes to Macys with photo ID (UK passport or driving licence) she can receive a visitors shopping card that will give her a further 11% off her shopping there!!.
