We're looking into a family summer holiday in Slovenia, in August - me, DH and 2 teenage children. Any tips, advice and/or recommendations re where to go to, where to stay etc? I'm thinking about a 10-night trip with maybe 2-3 nights in Ljubliana initially, then moving to the mountains and lakes. Is it an easy country to get around?

Definitely visit these caves get there early or book but you will never need to go to a cave system ever again! Castle was good too.

My recommendation is to do it. Loved Slovenia!
We did two nights in Ljubljana (Airbnb in the centre) then 5 nights at Lake Bled. We stayed at Garden Village which is a gorgeous eco resort with tree houses. Definitely do the summer toboggan, Vingtar Gorge and a trip to Lake Bohinj.
We then drive down into Croatia to Rovinj, which is a gorgeous town with incredible food. We stayed at Island Hotel Katarina, which is just off shore but had two ferries an hour to the mainland. You can fly back from Pula or its only about 3hrs back to Ljubljana.
It was our best holiday ever.

Sandrasannoyingfriend, that sounds great. Can I ask you a couple of questions please?
If we went to Lake Bled by train would there b enough to do for about three days without a car?
We're the beds in the tree houses comfortable? I'm at an age where anything too hard does my back in!
It looks lovely though and I'm seriously considering it.

Haven't used them but website is a useful source of info Slovene Dream. We did a day trip into Slovenia from Austria a couple of years ago visiting Kobarid in the Soca valley, a beautiful area.

I went on a walking holiday with a company called 'Walk Slovenia' a few years ago. The countryside is gorgeous, and it was a combination of beautiful and interesting walks, amazing food and stylish accommodation. It's changed hands since I was there, but a new couple have taken over. I'd really recommend it.

If you're in the right area, visit the stud at Lipica. It's where the horses at the Spanish riding school in Vienna originate.

(Anyone else old enough to remember "White Horses"? )
