Anyone been to Sunny Beach in Bulgaria?

My BIL has bought 3 (yes 3) apts in Sunny Beach and he has travelled out there a couple of times last summer. Anyway to cut a long story short it looks like he is going to pass one of the apts onto us. The thing is, I used to work in travel and I know that Bulgaria used to have a very very bad reputation, ie bad food, bad service, crap accommodation etc etc and this is really putting me off. My BIL loves Bulgaria, although he is quite young and does seem to like the 18-30 type holiday. Has anyone been and if so what is your honest opinion and would you go there with a 11 mo baby?

I've been to Varna briefly and some of it was lovely, I don't know about Sunny Beach but I wasn't hugely impressed and I would probably not choose to go there on holiday. Sorry.

We went to Sunny beach last year, 8 adults and 4 kids aged between 15 month and 5 years.We had a lovely time it was clean mostly good service weather was fab food good and very cheap.Could be rowdy in some bars but there was always somewhere else to go.I would go back.

A couple of friends went with a 1yo and a 3yo and loved it. So much so that they also tried to buy a flat - although the purchase eventually fell through.

I think it all depends on what you like. Sunny Beach is too overcrowded for my liking personally.

Service and food are much better than they used to be but again depends where you are.

We have had postcards from families with school age children from Sunny Beach. Looked lovely but crowded. They both had a great time and both have since been back.

Work colleague went there last month. Hated every moment... even tried to get an early flight home.

It was rubbish btw

(not the shag, Bulgaria. The waiters just double charged all the meals, which was really annoying. Luckily it was cheap, but all the same, it was the bare-faced dishonesty of it that I found really unpleasant.)
