Long weekend with a 2yr old: West Country or the Lakes?

First of all we can't decide which direction to go in and we don't know where we'll stay when we get there! Any suggestions gratefully received.

lakes, always the lakes....we absolutely lurve the lakes and so do the kids.
picnics,walks,paddling it is just fab.
never been to west country, is that equally fab?
