Ive also posted on the Local MN Edinburgh page...
I am looking for recommendations of the must sees in Edinburgh and any off the beaten track gems I might miss as a tourist.
Im planning a short break in February for my husband and I. We will get the sleeper train arriving on Friday and leave on Monday at lunchtime.
I really want to make this trip special as it's our first break away with out our daughter and it will be his 40th birthday.
Many thanks in advance.

We did a short break in June last year. A friend suggested going out to Leith and visiting the Royal Yacht Britannia, which we did and thoroughly enjoyed. We also visited the botanical gardens, but I shouldn't think they are worth going to in February. We bought a 24 hour bus ticket where you can hop on and hop off at various sites.

Other places to visit:
Edinburgh Castle
Holyrood Palace
Mary King's Close
various museums
Edinburgh Dungeon (yes I know, but DD loves these places)

The Royal Mile is full of shops selling expensive tourist tat, but it has fine old buildings. We stayed just off the Royal mile in a couple of very expensive crap rooms in an old Edinburgh tenement, but it was very central and handy for everything. Take comfortable shoes and waterproof gear. Also be prepared for all the steps. Edinburgh is very hilly.

We loved climbing up Arthur's seat when we visited, we only stayed for one night so didn't do much sight seeing just wandered round and visited the Christmas market but google lovecrumbs bakery and try and stop in if you're nearby, most delicious cake ever and a really lovely little spot
