ESTA and new passport

I'm going to New York in April next year and my passport expires the same month, so I will be renewing it in January. However, I went to the US in August this year so my ESTA will still be current. Does anyone know if I can travel on the same ESTA or will I need a new one because of the new passport? The advice on the US Border Protection site isn't clear.

Esta’s are linked to passports so new passport new ESTA

To confirm what Quartz said - new passport means new ESTA.

OK thanks. I thought as much. Another $20 to fork out then!

If you have a new passport you will need a new ESTA to be completed.

You mention $20; this is incorrect. Only use the official US government website for your application which is the the cost is US $14 per person. [[https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/esta/
