Camcorder should be ok but he may not be allowed any other hand luggage.

You can take a camcorder on the plane as hand luggage - infact a valuable item like that is far better off being carried on your own person than in the hold. You can of course take other hand luggage in the bag as long along with the camcorder in it as its not too heavy.

Document holders for passports and the like can easily be obtained from a larger department store (think Debenhams for instance do such things).

there is a size and weight restriction on hand luggage and all items that are restricted are listed on airport websites. Camcorders are allowed as DP just took one with him. You may have to seperate some items to be placed in a clear bag (obtainable from the airport)

thanks for the advice, will he need to put camcorder batteries in a clear bag or will they be ok in camcorder bag?

They should be okay in the camcorder bag; any liquid items should be placed in a separate clear plastic bag.
