I wonder if anyone can tell me about areas they stayed. I'd really appreciate any advice.
Really looks lovely but in trying to find any information I read an old thread on here which said it was a bit "skanky"
We are a family of four.

I went to Dubrovnik last year and did a day trip to Montenegro. We visited Budva which was nice but quiet busy with casino's. And we went to Kotor which was absolutely beautiful. The mountains around that area are stunning.
We definitely want to go back one day.

I went about 6 years ago and it was wonderful. Budva was nice and I went to a beautiful lake with an amusing name that I’ve since forgotten.

Oops, I’m thinking of Lake Ohrid which is actually in Macedonia. Macedonia is lovely too if you venture further on.

Went a couple of years ago. It's a breathtakingly beautiful country. Stayed on the bay of Kotor. Kotor itself is a gorgeous walled town. Other places worth a visit are Sveti Stefan and Perast. Wasn't too struck on Budva, quite naff and very touristy.

We went there this year. It is beautiful and has lots to offer. But the infrastructure hasn’t been invested in as much as EU countries so we found that the roads were slow and felt a bit dangerous and it took a long time to get from a to b. Where are you thinking of staying? Really good value for money. We had a good holiday but I am not sure I wd rush back coz of the state of the roads tbh.....

I'm afraid I didn't like it much.

The food was just awful most of the time. The culture of food is not there because of communism. The scenery is beautiful, but many of the places I went played extremely loud music on the 'beach'- which are often concrete platforms.

The nicest part was a village called Rose, which was charming.

If you go, for the love of god don't go to Herceg Novi. It literally shakes with noise from all the bars.

I am.a Greece lover and Montenegro doesn't come close. But it is beautiful, in a dark and forbidding kind of way.

We stayed in Becici, I wasn't too mad on it. Typical seaside resort type place. Probably much nicer options around Kotor.

It's a beautiful country and we loved it. We had no DC so some of these may not be convenient/suitable for you but I'd check out Skadar Lake, Tara Canyon, Kotor old town & bay, Sveti Stefan (we walked from Becici but probably not an option with DC).

I've been to Kotor for a day as part of a cruise. As pp said, absolutely beautiful. Really lovely surroundings, the town was very interesting but can't really say much more as only there a little while. It poured with rain too!

I went a few years ago and it was one of our favourite holidays. I was with 4 kids and they loved it too.

We flew to Dubrovnik and drove down to tivat. We then went to durmitor national park and went to Bosnia for white water rafting.

It's beautiful and the mountains are stunning. I didn't think the roads were too bad and I did all the driving. The only bad experience we had was in Dubrovnik and that was just because it was so busy.

Have a great time!

We started by going through Herzeg Novi on the bus. Nothing to write home about. 3 nights in Perast which is nice but tiny. Kotor is lovely but, like Dubrovnoik, being ruined by the enourmous cruise ships that visit.
We spent a week walking to Cetinje. The walking was the best we've ever done.
Cetinje is so so. Vizpazar is nice. We caught the train from Podgorica (awful) to Kolasin, which is a good centre for walking.

We stayed in the bay of Kotor. Don't use the buses, they're awful and only a tiny bit cheaper than taxis. Kotor old town is lovely, as is the bay. We stayed self catering with a pool and it was a really cheap holiday. Food was fine, pretty standard Mediterranean really.

lucydogz · 08/12/2017 21:32

a good trip, if you're fairly active, is to climb the Ladder up from Kotor. Not the Steps, which runs parrallel part of the way up, but is busy.

Elmosmum · 11/12/2017 18:54

We Airbnb'd in kotor and hired a car it was lovely. Drove along the coast with some fantastic views.

Budva has a great big family oriented beach with all the facilities it's great for kids.

If you pay a little more and avoid the tourist restaurants you'll find lovely quality food.

I would really recommend hiring a car and exploring - it's the most beautiful place I've been bar Venice
