have you looked at travelodges and travelinns. there is a travel inn in uttoxeter and it is right next to a pub (the racecourse) I think it is called

littlemissbossy · 22/07/2004 13:31

yes Fio, thanks, but they're fully booked. We can get in the Alton Towers hotel but it's nearly £350 for 4 of us sharing for one night!

muddaofsuburbia · 22/07/2004 13:41

LMB - there's a great site called "Smooth Hound" which lists hotels/B&Bs etc. We've used it before and if you quote when you book, you usually get some kind of discount.

If this has worked, the Stafforshire page is here .

We've stayed in Leek, Stoke and Stone years ago when I was younger.

Fio2 · 22/07/2004 13:42

the vine hotel

We stayed in a great B&B in Alton village last year. There are loads of them there, but I will try to check which one. It had it's own website, but I can't remember it's name!! It had family rooms and was really great value (£20 a head) Do check those out as they are better value than a hotel. Alos this B&B had a bar inside, so you could put the kids to bed and wander down the hall for a drink

crunchie · 22/07/2004 14:38

found it!! It was called Malt House and I think the website is www.themalt-house.com or do a google search (sorry my pC is buggering up and won't work properly) They are great people and a nice place.

crunchie · 22/07/2004 14:40

www.the-malthouse.com Worked this time!!

littlemissbossy · 22/07/2004 14:56

Thanks everyone for your suggestions ... still looking through them all

We've just got back from Alton Towers today lmb.

If you (like us) want cheap and cheerful: we stayed at the travel lodge at the Stafford/Stone MOTO services northbound on the M6. It's a great services: there's an outdoor kids play area, a huge lake with loads of birds, and space to run and play. Typical travel lodge rooms - no character but predictably clean and spacious. £55 per room (sleeps up to 4), but you get £5 off if you book online, and £5 off if you are an RAC member. (You do need to book though as it tends to be full). It took about 45 mins to drive from there to Alton Towers this morning.

(There is another Travel Lodge at Uttoxeter, which is much nearer).

littlemissbossy · 22/07/2004 21:35

Thanks for that info Roisin, unfortunately most of the travel inn type hotels are fully booked for the day we want to go, but I've emailed a B&B that someone recommended earlier today to see if they have availability. Did you enjoy Alton Towers? I must admit it isn't my cup-of-tea really, but my dss's would love to go... and I have found a good deal now on lastminute.com so am going to try and get more money out of dh once he finally gets in from work
