Car hire worry

Okay - here's the problem / worry:

Going on holiday 7 Aug - just booked it.
Need car hire to take us from Pisa airport to villa in Tuscany and to get around while there etc.

Need credit card to hire a car.

I don't have any, cancelled and paid them all off earlier this year.

DP hasn't got one and can't get one due to poor credit rating.

I've applied for one with my bank and one with first direct who are a division of my bank.
Could take up to 3 weeks, i don't have that long.
Also worried I'll be declined as very overdrawn right now.

Also my old style D.licence is currently with the DVLA!

Aggghhhhhhhhhh. What do I do girls?

You'll have to pay a big deposit in cash or travellers cheques I would think. You might be best with a car hire broker - try holiday autos, on this page they say that some of their partners will take cash.

We've booked through them 3 times and they've been really good and quite cheap.

StickyNote · 22/07/2004 13:38

Could a friend pay for you? Or does it have to be presented in person? If so, could you pay at a UK branch?

Thomcat · 22/07/2004 13:50

feeling a bit calmer now thank you, will try that Mrs FP - thanks girls

Would a debit card do? Our Abbey National debit card has a Visa symbol on it, which means that we can use it abroad. Provided you had the funds in your bank account to cover any potential deposit, that might do. Ask Holidayautos - my brother swears by them.

There are still 2 weeks before you go - your licence may be back from the DVLA by then. When did you send it to them? If you're worried , try giving them a call.

Thomcat · 22/07/2004 14:25

Have phoned DVLA - they say that they have posted out an application form for the new licence - will take about 2 weeks minimum though to process and they don't know if it will be back in time.

Thank you - phoned Holiday autos were great and will line me up with Sixt in Pisa for £160 for 6 days and they will accept someone elses card and charge a total of approx £10- £15 for somone else other than cc holder to drive.

DP can use his licence.

One solution, as long as we can get someone elses card! - Phew

Subject to our final checks, we will be happy to open your Credit Card for you as soon as we receive the signed application form.

What car rental company are you using Thomcat - we used the one through Parker Villas and found they were the best - lot cheaper and more reliable than all of the other ones we looked at!!

OOohhhh we are coming back on the 7th and you will be flying out!!

Thomcat · 22/07/2004 14:45

The 7th also happens to be my birthday! well I'll wave to you up in the sky Twinkie!

I rany Holidayautos and they quoted me £160 for the 6 days with a co called SIXT.
What are the details of your car hire co and i'll give them a call see if they can beat SIXT.

Thanks Twinks, xx
