Does an overseas summer holiday for 5 people really cost £2000+?

We were hoping to go abroad for 2 weeks in the summer hols. Have been doing a quick search and even using cheap flights with Easy Jet/Jet2 and a mobile home seems to be between £2000-£2500. Is this right or am I looking in the wrong places? We don't want anything fancy, just use of a pool, a bit of sun and not at all 'Butlins like'. Any ideas?

It is crazy! Been looking into the same thing - even 'lodge' in holiday park in New Forest was over £2000!!!!! Have you looked into renting in France and going by car? Seems like everyone who wanted to go away in school hols booked last November!!

Live 'up north' so driving to France with kids bit scary! Just can't believe how expensive it is to holiday. Just about everyone we know manages to do it every year and it makes me wonder how they do it. It's such a massive percentage of a family income. We haven't had a proper family summer holiday for years so perhaps I'm just out of step with what things cost.

I would say that for 2 weeks it's actually even good.

My only advice regarding airlines would be to register for as many economy airlines' newsletters as you can, so you are the first to know when cheap tickets become available. Last year we managed to go to Spain for less than £20 return per head inc. taxes. But I was buying the tickets 5 minutes after I got the newsletter.

It also helps to get a cheaper fare if you are prepared to fly late at night, on a Tue/tWed/Thurs or Saturday.

Unfortunately, if you want to go somewhere "decent" it costs arms and legs - not just one! Specially if your "children" are 16 and 14 like ours so we are paying for four adults. In the school holidays as well so that is even worse!! We got REALLY good deal for a two week holiday but it's £4k not £2k. I am afraid it is going on the credit card!!!

We'ew going away at the end of Aprill to Lanzarote and we've managed to get a gorgeous villa for 525 pounds (sorry pound signb doesn't work) and that will accomodate me, dp, Dd1 (5), Dd2 (8mths), Dp's friend and his Dp and their 2 children (6 and 1)!! If we went with Thompson it would have cost us over 800 ounds but we went straight to the people who owned it. Try looking for flights on XL.com as we always find cheap flights with them (we're paying 248 pounds for all 4 of us) If you can be flexible with dates try a few days either side of the original date you enter
