Florida Keys in a week.....

So it looks like our insurance isn't going to cover us cancelling our holiday to the Keys in about a week...

Our plans were going to be to fly into Miami, stay there for 2 nights, hire a car, go to the Everglades for a day before driving down to Key West for a couple of nights, then driving up the keys to Islamorada for a couple of nights before returning home.

The hotels in Miami and Key West are going to be open, but we will have to make other arrangements for the last part of the trip.

I am slightly dreading this now. I know they Keys is technically open to tourists from today, but I feel like we'd be intruding on their recovery efforts in a really entitled way, expecting restaurants and stuff to do!

Any advice?

Key West seems very much open. I have been looking at the Trip Advisor forums and those are useful. Like you was supposed to stay in Islamadora. Not heard yet if hotel still there but I plan to check again then rebook higher up the keys. There's s balance between being a nuisance and supporting the economy. I think staying out of the most impacted zones but visiting the other parts is a good compromise. And Everglades reopened this week so that is a relief.

I was meant to be going to the Orlando and Florida Keys (Key West) as part of my honeymoon on in September but due to Irma, we couldn't even get to Florida. My travel agent got full refunds for both hotels and car hire (I'm still trying to sort out our internal flight money however) Is it worth asking for their support?

(We ended up spending a week in New York - there's worse places to be stranded!!)

Citycat - when they were answering the phone I found it helpful to look at hotels websites, Facebook pages and Twitter accounts if you are signed up to them. Well it looks like we are going either way! Fingers crossed.

I didn't book through a travel agent.

Key west is so beautiful and wasn’t badly damaged by Irma.
We went and stayed near Marathon in August. We drove to key west for the day and I just loved it.

From Miami to key west will take you at least 4.5 hours driving.
It’s a beautiful drive but very long.

I know the drive time thanks, we had planned a little road trip
