Train travel in Germany

I'm planning a trip to the beautiful Moselle Valley in Germany to a place called Cochem but I'm a bit worried about how to get there from the airport.

I plan on flying into Frankfurt Main airport and Cochem is about 2 hrs away by car so taxi will be too expensive. So I'm thinking about taking the train? Can anyone give me some advice please, what are the trains like there? Is there another option? Grateful for any advice! Thank you

Hi,

Frankfurt airport has a train station and will give you connections. The easiest would be checking this website:

www.bahn.com/en/view/index.shtml

There are several train types, from regional ones (RE) to Intercity (IC) to Intercity Express (ICE), the faster trains do not stop that frequently so you need to check, a cheaper one may take longer, it all depends if you are in a rush.

You will get issued one ticket which will be valid for all your changes as well. Do make a seat reservation, it costs extra but necessary esp if you go on a weekend.

Alternatively you could rent a car.

No specific advice but Cochem is lovely
We go to Germany roughly once a year and the trains are very easy

Thank you! I visited the Moselle Valley as a child on a school trip and have never forgotten all these years later, how lovely it was.

Ok thank you, so it sounds like the trains are pretty straightforward. Can I book the train tickets prior to travel or should I purchase on arrival?

We always just buy them at the station but we only do local journeys so I'm not sure if it wouid be better for you to book, sorry
Have a lovely time though, I'm very jealous and might have to plan our next trip now!!

you can book online Deutsche Bahn has an English language option if you need it. www.bahn.com.
You can print tickets out in advance also so you don't have to faff about at the airport. Frankfurt has a station at the airport.

Cochem and the area around is lovely.
German train system is very efficient.
Have you looked at the German Tourist Board site, there are links to Deutsche Bahn.
