Where would be warm but not scorchio in August?

I'm super fussy about very hot weather. We normally we go away in May half-term to the Med, which means that the weather is a perfect 25-30c.

However next year we can't get away that week, and will probably we stuck with August as the only time we can go. I assume S.Spain/Turkey/Greece are all pretty roasting at that time of year, and so was wondering about France, but not sure where.

I'd even thought about Germany (the Baltic coast) but not sure if that's risking the weather being too cold. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Dordogne
Il de Re
La Rochelle

All are lovely areas of France that should be 25-30 in August.Smile

Thank you! I don't know anything about these places, but will get researching once the I've got the homework/supper/bath/bed production line done.

Northern Spain, the Azores, Atlantic coast of Portugal.

excellent, thank you.
we normally book ryanair/easyjet flights and sort out our own accommodation, so I'll see how near to any of these I can get. I think the Azores would be trickier but will have a look at the others.

I always refer to the accuweather website. you can search on places and go back previous years to look at the temperatures. Its a brilliant resource when planning holidays.

We went to the Costa de la Luz (Spanish Atlantic coast) last year and had around 30-ish most days. Lovely area, more spanish and less developed compared to Costa de la Sol.

Germany is a hit and miss. We went this year to northern Bavaria and the Alsacian border and had 30 degrees in both areas while my mum up north towards the Dutch border had lousy low twenties and rain some days.

Hoppinggreen · 16/09/2017 09:41

We own a property in Costa de la Luz and while it IS a lovely area we don't usually go in August as it's too hot for us.
Funnily enough we often go to Bavaria instead (DH is German) but this year we went to the French Alps and it was lovely
nora you have great taste in holidays !!!

I would LOVE to go to Bavaria (we had a brilliant holiday in Franconia in Feb) or the Alps, but the DC will take a lot of convincing about a summer holiday without a beach.

Well I live in Bavaria And it's pretty warm in the summer. There are loads of lakes, which are in some way better than the sea. Different but water anyway.

I don't like super hot weather. But I've been to Croatia and Mallorca in August. Even this year when Croatia was REALLY hot, it didn't feel that hot because of the lovely sea breeze.

Hoppinggreen · 16/09/2017 18:37

Show them the lakes!!
Some of them have beaches

Both Ryanair and EasyJet go to the Azores though one of them goes via Lisbon. I thoroughly recommend it. We spent a very happy and warm fortnight there two years ago.

We were on the Polish part of the Baltic coast this August. Temperatures in the mid 20s. There are lovely swimming lakes inOlzyen, 2 hours out of Gdansk. Apartments there are cheap as well.

Northern Spain is also a bit of a hidden gem. Oviedo was nice. Near beaches and not baking hot.

monkeyblonde · 16/09/2017 21:51

@slug where did you stay in Oviedo please? Interested in Northern Spain but hard to find family accommodation!

It was our first go at AirB&B. A lovely 3 bedroom apartment on the edge of the old town. The owner was a bloke called Bruno. He had a shop below where he made and slid lively but expensive bags.

I had the same issue at opting for Spanish Atlantic coast... if its hot i will head for the hills

notanotherlasagne · 22/09/2017 18:09

Switzerland? Fly to Geneva and drive round the lake and into the mountains - gorgeous in summer and beautiful thermal lakes for swimming...
