NYE short break?

I'm after some advice or other ideas about a NYE break if possible. 2 adults only.

This is what we're after:

  • Northern airport flights (wanted to go to slovenia but can only find LGW flights)
  • 4-5 nights
  • top end hotel
  • Cold - very very cold is fine! We'd like to go snowmobiling as dh has never done it and fancies it.
  • We don't ski (and won't be learning as my knees can't take it), but wouldn't rule out ski resorts if there was enough non-ski to do (things like snowmobiles, snow shoeing, skating etc would be fab).
  • We like wandering around cities - architectural and historical sights would be good
  • budget - not an issue. Would like around the 2k mark realistically, but willing to pay for an awesome hotel. 3k wouldn't be an issue if hotels were pay later rates!
  • have done many major cities like Paris, Barcelona, Munich, Milan already so rather not them.

Ideas so far have been Riga, Copenhagen, Krakow, Zurich and Liechtenstein, Prague, Oslo, Reykjavik. Cunard are doing a 5 night cruise Southampton-Bruges-Amsterdam, but would need full payment within 2-3 weeks which we can't due to another holiday in 3 weeks time. The northern finland wilderness camps are the same.

I'd love to do Moscow or St Petersburg but he thinks its too dodgy politically at the minute, and with 4 other overseas trips for holidays / work in between, application for visas could be an issue if the embassy need our passports.

Any other ideas or feedback on those places would be appreciated! I'm just fed up of ending up spending NYE battling for taxis to and from somewhere that is average at best, or paying through the nose for something that is awesome, and realising we could have gone away for similar money. We've also had a very close bereavement this year so a quiet one at home would not be good for us mentally - we need to be doing something different.

How about Lucerne. Flights to Zurich, 45min train to Lucerne. Beautiful place with loads of top hotels. Take a day trip to the mountains, Engelberg for some snowmobiling or Grindelwald, a bit further but stunning too.

St Petersburg. Amasing city, visa applications straight forward and quick processing and felt very safe when we were there.

What about flights to Geneva and driving to Chamonix or one of the other close by ski resorts?

Sounds like some good ideas there, shall get googling!

We've been to Venice and Rome for NYE. Flights for both from Manchester and easyjet now fly from Liverpool to Venice as well. Free concert in Rome near the colliseum and in Venice we book a restaurant for their NY celebration - there's a good mix of tourists and locals and some of the locals recognised us last year. It finishes in time to catch the fireworks and last year there was an open air disco with people of all ages, from teens to 70-somethings in their fur coats, still dancing at 3am.
