Where should we go?

Myself, DH and DD are trying to plan our last family holiday together for August next year. DD will be 17 so has said it could well be the last time it's just the 3 of us!. Would like some culture and shopping but also want to be on a coast and with access to a pool. We would need 2 rooms so would be looking at apartments. We have in the past done villas in Portugal/Greece so want something a bit more "holiday of a lifetime". DH will not consider Africa or Far East and would not want to fly more than 12 hours. We think we have narrowed this down to Bermuda or California - does anyone have any experience of these and any tips.

I should say DD has a major phobia with birds - from some research I have discovered that Bermuda and parts of the Caribbean have a problem with feral chickens - can anyone confirm this as that would be a big problem!

Also DH has in the past had really nasty reactions to mosquito bites so want to try and avoid these as much as possible.

We would not want to be away for more than say 10 nights and don't want a holiday where we are driving between too many places.

Any ideas and suggestions gratefully received. xxxx

Sri Lanka. Lots to see and beautiful beaches in the south.

I love Southern California (haven't visited the north so can't comment on that). You might need to do a fair bit of driving but could probably get away with visiting 2 or 3 places with a few nights in each.

LA is fun. I like Santa Monica and Venice Beach (don't know the other areas). Traffic hideous though!

On the coast, Santa Barbara and San Diego are both great. You can get the train to either from LA in a couple of hours, but to explore the area you'd need a car really.

Inland, Palm Springs is fab - lots of retro motels with great pools (eg the Ace Hotel). You can drive into Joshua Tree national park from there.

Re your daughter's phobia, beware some coastal areas have pelicans but they don't come close to you!

I don't know Bermuda so can't compare. I loved Barbados but doubt the weather there is good in August.

Happy planning!

PS I know it's officially Africa but the Seychelles is amazing and maybe somewhere your DH would consider? I think August is decent there. Used to be all luxury hotels but more B&B / boutique type places and air bnbs now.
