Compact camera with high quality pics for beach shots?

Hi

Can anyone make a recommendation? I'm going to buy a new camera. Sick of lugging around my digital slr canon, which was never that great anyway. Going on a long haul beach holiday with kids.
I want a compact camera. I miss the old point and shoot olympus I had in my youth that took stunning pictures around the world.

What I hate most about digital cameras is that none of the photos look like the classic shots you used to be able to take with non digital cameras back in the 70s and 80s. With digital, I always find it looks as if "the light is on" even if outdoors.

Is there a camera you'd recommend with great photo quality? I don't care about tech features. Just want photos that print out beautifully.
Budget 250 but max 300.

Researched the Sony wx500 but still unsure.

All advice appreciated.

I would go for the Sony. I used to have an Olympus compact too, and now have the Sony RX100. I think the photos look very film-like.
The menus are fiddly but so are most compacts I think.
I'd get a case to stop sand getting into it. (With hindsight...)
