Does anyone know Lisbon well?

I am trying to organise a short break to Lisbon for DH and me.
We have never been to Portugal before so I am fairly clueless regarding areas of the city however, I have done a lot of reading and cross referencing and have found suitable accommodation in either an area near to Elevador da Gloria or one near to Santa Justa elevator.
Which would be the best option for a grumpy old man who doesn't like walking or hills(!)?
We would be self catering, so fairly near to shops, supermarkets, bars and cafes would be good - though we are past our prime so don't particularly want clubs.
This will be a winter visit (December).
Thanks, in anticipation.

I went to Lisbon in May with a friend for my 40th birthday, it was amazing! We had three nights there, but stayed in an Ibis hotel on the outskirts of the city centre (but by no means outside the city) near the Saldahna underground station.

I can picture exactly where the Elevador de Gloria is and that would be a really good location for everything that you've said you want (we didn't go clubbing either!).

It's so easy to get around the city on the underground, trams and buses. There is a travel card that you buy once then top up every 24 hours, it was only about €6 or something like that and you just tap in and out of stations and onto buses and trams like an Oyster card in London.

Enjoy!

Thanks for your input Alice.
Funnily enough, I asked the same question on another forum (related to trips) and was advised by someone who lives in Lisbon, to avoid the Elevador de Gloria option and to go for the Santa Justa option.
So that is the one we've booked!
Only time will tell who was right, I suppose.
Your travel card advice is very helpful.
Thank you.

I don't think you can go wrong wherever you stay really, it's very easy to get around the city. You'll have a fantastic time.

We recently visited Lisbon and loved it. It's a great city and I will definitely return. The travel card is a must.
