We are off on Saturday for a week in Beltem, nearish to Cala N'Picafort. Anyone know the area? good easy walking tracks? the weather isnt likely to be fab, but we are into quiet beaches for bucket and spade whatever the weather. Any local tips for places that like children. Also - we arrive late saturday night into palma - anyone know if any supermarkets will be open? thanks all.

Hi, I live here in Mallorca but don´t know that area too well for giving you tips. I think you´d be hard pressed to find a place here that doesn´t like children so that is not a problem!

Are you picking up a car at the airport? One or two of the big supermarkets will be open until 10pm, there is one about 5/10mins drive from the airport. Let me know and I´ll give you directions.

Dh is back in a minute, I´ll ask him if he knows anything particularly good about that area but in general he knows less about the place than I do, and he´s from here!

moopymoo · 27/03/2007 08:53

yes, we are picking a car up...flight lands at 21.30 so we will need to get a wiggle on to catch supermarkets! Whats the weather like ? I looked and it seems to be improving towards the weekend. Are many supermarkets open sunday? i know next weekend is palm Sunday do you know if that makes a difference? what is your favourite beach? sorry for all questions! (your fault for living somewhere so beautiful...)

No problem! You probably won´t make the supermarket then if you only arrive at 2130 and still have to get bags and stuff. If you do make it out early go out the airport following signs to Palma, Take the exit Coll d´en Rebassa on the right (should be first exit you see), This will bring you to a roundabout and I think you´ll see the supermarket off one of those roundabout exits. If not you need to take first right off the roundabout (the sign will point to Coll d´en Rebassa)and go to the next roundabout and it´s there. Sorry but I don´t go there often so working very much from rusty memory!
Nowhere will be open on sunday I´m afraid except bars and restaurants and maybe paper shops. Having said that there is a chain of supermarkets called ´Syp´ and a few of their branches around the island open for a half day on sunday but I don´t know if there´ll be one near you. I imagine there´ll be someone you can ask once you´re there though. Prepare for the worst, if you really need anything in particular for the sunday that can´t wait, think about taking it with you.

Beach wise I tend to stick to the west but one of our favourites is Cala San Vicente between Puerto Pollensa and Pollensa. You´ll want to drive towards Alcudia and then to Puerto Pollensa and then to Pollensa and you´ll see a sign to the Cala. Once you arrive in the area you´ll see there are several little beaches if you just follow the road around and around, the biggest one is still quite small and good for kids.

The weather has gone a bit chilly with this cold fron that has come through, if it stays like this it won´t be beach weather at all but hopefully it´s going to cheer up again. Looking at the local weather the first couple of your days might be a bit miserable but hopefully clearing up after that.

There´s also a pretty beach called Cala Agulla in the east near Cala Ratjada. I can´t remember directions but shouldn´t be too hard to find, just pick up a map/ ask and someone should be able to point you in the right direction.

thankyou so much, fingers crossed for improving weather! we love palma + history etc so im sure we will keep busy whatever . thanks, sarah

Oh yeah, there is a fair on just outside palma which should still be on when you are out, I imagine it will be up until Easter. I don´t know how old your kids are but there´s a few rides and I imagine most ages would be catered for so maybe a beach alternative?

I dont think I can beat Maveta's advice!!!

Except to say- Majorca out of season is beautiful.
