Majorca advice

Hi,

We are travelling to Majorca in August, landing in Palma at 9.25am and then have an airbnb villa in Pollensa village, which we can't check into until 3pm. I'm looking for suggestions as to where to go to pass the time in before check in.

The complication is that DH, me and the three kids have a hire car, which fits 5. My mum is now also coming, but only for a couple of days, so she has not got a car. So we need somewhere that she can easily get public transport to, or somewhere to go in Palma or Pollensa (either end of the journey basically). She is happy to get a bus or taxi, but obviously we want to keep it simple for her.

I expect we'll also be tired (6am flight) and hot! Any suggestions, very gratefully received. Thanks.

Hmmm. How's about heading to Pollensa, and having some lunch when you get there? Just thinking it will probably take you an hour or so to get through airport and pick up car, then another hour to get to Pollensa. By the time you factor in getting your mum sorted on the bus and meeting her again, it will be lunchtime. Have a long lunch and maybe a bit of time at the beach? Not familiar with Pollensa village though, but beach might be too far.

I love wandering around Palma, but wouldn't be keen after an early flight and with kids on tow. Think I would prefer to get sorted at my accommodation first.

Thanks for your reply HoosierDaddy. I think that's what we might have to do, but I was hoping to take advantage of being in Palma, or if there was somewhere easy to stop on the way. We've never been to Majorca.

Anyone have any other suggestions? Or any recommendations for Pollensa? Thanks.

The airport isn't in Palma but inland . iirc there is a large supermarket part of the way along the main road towards Pollensa/Alcudia. The coast road makes the beach easily accessible near Pollensa Club resort although not sure about parking.

We are just backnfrom Pollensa!
I haven't been to Palma but have heard it's nice. Large marina where the. If cruise ships come in. You could do a wander around there?
We always get a villa just outside Pollensa town (prefer it to Puerto Pollensa), and it's about 50-60 mins by car to Pollensa.
Personally, I would just head to Pollensa, park, and have a wander around. It's beautiful, shady, and in the main square there are loads of restaurants perfect for al fresco lunch.
We called in to our villa company and they rang and the villa was ready at 1 instead of 4pm. You might get lucky too?
Have fun, it's such a beautiful place.

The queue for the hire car at Palma airport was the longest one we've ever been in. Be warned! I'd suggest you wait for the luggage and your DH can go straight through and queue at the car hire place. It took around an hour and a half for us, and a similar time for our friends who arrived three days earlier than us. This was about a month ago.

BubblesBuddy · 15/07/2017 16:18

Change the hire car?

olympicsrock · 15/07/2017 16:18

Palma aquarium is fab - lots of sharks. Outdoor play area with water fountains etc. We usually go on our last day. Otherwise how about going too Cala St Vicente which is near Pollensa. Lovely day on the beach. Children's playground near a public toilet/ shower block. Once you can check in to the villa you can do 2 runs as it is only 10 mins away.

Go to your villa straight from the airport.....it will probably be at least midday by the time you get there. The villa may be cleaned and ready. If not, drop all your cases off then head out to either Pollensa or Puerto Pollensa for lunch and meet your Mum at a predetermined restaurant. By the time you have done all this, your villa will be ready. In my experience they are often ready by 1pmish.

Stillwaitingforsummer · 15/07/2017 17:18

Palm is beautiful. We did the open top bus tour. That would be good then you could get lunch and head over to Puerto pollensa.

Stillwaitingforsummer · 15/07/2017 17:19

Or go to Palma of you have time to fill before a flight home.

LIZS · 15/07/2017 17:44

Could you head into Palma first then collect your car after lunch?

Bombus · 16/07/2017 15:06

Thank you everyone. That's really helpful. I will have a think about your suggestions and see what might work best for us.

When we booked the hire car, it was so much more expensive to get a car that fitted 6 - it was much more the cost of getting two cars. My mum said she'd hire a little car for herself (she's also only with us for a few days) but then she decided against it, as she prefers to use public transport.

Is it easy to get into Palma from the airport? eg if we all went by public transport and then picked up the car later? (my mum would then get a bus to Pollensa). Although I'm not sure what we'd do with our luggage...

About 40 minutes on the bus and 8 euros I believe. (airport to Palma)

The route maps look good.

gallicgirl · 16/07/2017 15:25

Ooo no, 20 minutes an 5 euro, even better.

I agree to go to Puerto pollensa!

Bombus · 17/07/2017 10:52

Thanks again. I think the simplest solution would be to go straight to Pollensa. We'll be tired and not wanting to faff about. Fingers crossed that our villa is ready early.
