Driving from Calais to Switzerland - advice on best routes please!

We are driving to the Bernese Oberland next half-term and wondering which is the most time-efficient way to do it (Only ever flown before but pricey and restricting with 4 dcs.) The AA website advises going through France and viaMichelin suggests a route through Belgium. Both routes enter Switzerland through Mulhouse and Basel. Given experiences of travelling around France we are pretty sure one is the most sensible and the other will be the one which takes for ever and afterwards everyone will say 'Oh, no, you shouldn't have gone THAT way!' Any advice out there? First post, by the way, but months of lurking have taught me what a wealth of helpful information there is on here!

Sorry i can't help with the route - only done it once. viamichelin will give you a few options - recommended/shortest/quickest/economical. The recommended one is meant to be the best compromise between time and distance.

Thanks for that Mint. I will have another look at via Michelin for different options. Also, forgot to mention that of course we don't intend to do this in one go (at last, DH has learned that it ruins the holiday to attempt too much in one day), so any recommendations for reasonable stopover points would be appreciated. e.g. We've heard the Chalons Ibis is ok, if we take that route.

I always use viamichelin, Haven't looked at your specific route but would say that if you are going via Belgium/Germany you will save on motorway tolls.
