Harry Potter - wise to travel in one day?!

Looking to visit Harry Potter studios, ideally late August. We live approx just under a 3hr car drive away. Kids are 12 & 8 & travel relatively well...

OH will be doing the driving, he doesn't mind driving there & back in one day, even though it will be tiring. I'm wondering if it will be a better idea if we should stay over night somewhere, in which case, I ask for recommendations and also, would we a) be better off taking our time driving down & booking into a hotel & staying the night, then do the HP visit the following day & head home after the visit or b) get up early, drive down, HP, stay overnight in hotel & then leave following morning? As I've typed it I'm thinking b does sounds better. Bearing in mind we'll have a small hold-all of some sort but I suppose we could leave that I the car boot.

So any recommendations or tips would be appreciated!

I wouldn't want to do a six hour round trip anywhere. Will you need to be on the M25? If so, it could easily be much longer than that. There are several Premier Inns very close to the studio tour - I'd book into that. Also, you have to get timed tickets for entry, and with a three hour drive I'd be worried about missing my slot. So I'd stay the night before and go in the morning.

Have you looked at train travel? They do a shuttle bus from Watford Junction.

If you want a bit more of a trip, stay in nearby St Albans - masses of restaurants and pretty little market town. Then 20 min drive to HP. If you just want to do HP, stay in Watford, still plenty of restaurants in less pretty town centre.
