Can you travel back to UK the day your passport expires?

After a lot of googling I seem to understand that to travel to Spain from the UK my passport only needs to be valid for the duration of my trip, not for this extra three months or whatever.
But I was wondering if the passport goes out of date ON the expiry date, or if it can still be used on that day. My passport (just my luck) goes out of date on a certain day where for some reason flights back to the UK are about £130 cheaper than normal. I understand there'd be the risk that if my flight was delayed to the next day/cancelled then I wouldn't have a passport but can't seem to find out if the life of a passport includes the expiry date ??
Thanks !!

Yes it does include an expiry date. It that is the date you fly home then your passport will expire on midnight on that day. Does your flight arrive back in the UK in good time. How much of a delay would it take for you to arrive after midnight?

Renewals are reasonably fast, I personally couldn't cope with the worry I'd be stranded if my flight was delayed/redirected/cancelled and just get a renewal if you've the time. You're still saving money overall if it's £130 cheaper

It depends on the airline policy rather than UK border control. Technically you don't have to have a passport, it is just the easiest way to prove your identity and nationality. The airlines are wary of carrying anyone who might not be allowed in, as they can face hefty fines if they do so. So I would check with your airline whether they will let you check in and travel on a near expired document

Having been caught in the volcanic ash and delayed for 16 days I would not take the risk. Are you planning to not renew again?
