Early October destinations

Looking at a holiday end of September/October, sun is nice but not looking for lazing by the pool sort of temperatures.

I'd really like to go somewhere in Greece or Croatia but reading up seems to suggest that a lot of the places there are already closing up for winter. Anyone care to suggest any different?

Or suggest other options for that time of year? We're just a couple, no children, like decent food, walking, general sightseeing, prefer quieter places to having a wealth of resturants/bars on the doorstep. Prefer self catering, and must have direct flights from the UK, although might consider a flight plus ferry.

We normally holiday later in the year and head for the Canaries due to that but thought a change might be nice - although still considering La Gomera.

Southern Greece- Crete, Rhodes, Symi for example.

I like the look of a lot of the smaller Greek islands but think with just a week we'd be better going somewhere that's a bit more straightforward to get to.

Any particular recommendations for areas on Crete or Rhodes? We normally prefer to stay away from resorts? Also I'm coeliac, will I be able to find restaurants to cater for that

Look at Halki near Rhodes or Symi Loutro in Crete. All these are non touristy beautiful places.

We went to Crete early October last year and it was still v warm, 30c a few days. We stayed near Almyrida in the quieter west end of the island and it was lovely. DS is gluten intolerant and we had no problem finding food for him anywhere, all the restaurants were lovely, understood and catered for him well (though he did eat a lot of grilled meat with chips!)
