DH has a business trip to Kuala Lumpur end April. I was wondering whether to tag along. Can anyone tell me what it's like please?

I lve Malaysia.
We spent a month there with dd when she was about 2.
I'd be there like a shot.

It's fab!
I could spend all day shopping in the Petronas towers

sophy · 21/03/2007 20:15

what else is there to do besides shopping?

Culturally? scenically?

My dh's family live in KL It's very hot and humid, it makes me feel exhausted all the time, but if you're staying in a reasonably high-standard hotel it will be air-conditioned and comfortable.

Are you bringing children with you, or just you and your dh? I think it's probably worthwhile for a visit. It's sort of a westernised version of asia, so a little bit exotic but not scarily so. You can get yourself about fairly easily and Engish is quite widely spoken.

Is there any chance of tagging a few days onto your trip? You could visit some really beautiful parts of Malaysia like Pankor Laut or Langkawi.

Answer to whether to tag along? Yes!!

Mind you I haven't been there since I was 9 or 10

It was pretty futuristic even then

Food!
Food!
Food!

My prime reason for going.

Lots of interesting things.
Borrow a guide book from the library.
Planning is half the fun.

We would leave the kids behind

I love Malaysia. Not so much KL (have been to a lot of Asian cities and HK is my favourite by a mile), but see if you can work in a trip to Langkawi which is heaven on earth...

Can I come too?

cece · 21/03/2007 20:25

A side trip to Cameron Highlands would be good.

moondog · 21/03/2007 20:25

Cameron Highlands are brilliant...

cece · 21/03/2007 20:34

Perhentian Islands also great but take your own booze.

CAM · 22/03/2007 08:24

What I remember about Cameron Highlands is the thousands of Chrysanthemums and having to wear a cardigan!

sophy · 23/03/2007 14:33

Am getting excited about idea of adding on a few days somewhere with a tranquil and beautiful beach -- so which is better Perhentian Islands or Langkawi? I googled Cameron Highlands, looked lovely but a bit like Scotland or Wales?

Were in KL for 2nd part of honeymoon. Bit of a culture shock. Stayed in Mandarin Oriental which was SO nice. Food was amazing too. Temples incredible and the massages you can get there out of this world. It's a city of contrasts. We did a canal tour and it was unbelievable.
Went to Langkawi first. It was very pretty (really strange weather would tip it with rain, then stop as suddenly as downpour stareted and be baking hot again). Some parts were quite developed and touristy. A place to chill and do nothing really.
Jet lag going there was terrible.

I lived in HK for most of my childhood and Malayasia was bar far my fav place to go. Cameron Highlands is great - stock up on Boh tea (my mums swears it's the best). Also if you have achance go down to KK (Kota Kinabalu) in Borneo about a 2 hr plane hop. The shangri-la there (called the Tanjang Aru) is fab.

So jealous!
